January 19 Program  - Global Compliance at McDonalds
Amy Kovalan, Vice President, Chief Compliance Officer for McDonald's Corporation, outlined the complex nature of global compliance for this international fast food provider. McDonald's feeds 68 million people each day through 39,000 restaurants, in 119 countries. Amy's job is to see that McDonald's operations comply with the rules and ethical standards of the US government, foreign governments, local governments, and their own stringent operational standards.  Recognizing also the cultural and local differences necessary to be successful in foreign markets.  Amy emphasized that the most important aspect of compliance is "3rd party due diligence". She needs to ensure that organizations that do business with McDonald's also comply with the ethical and governmental standards.

EREY Link

Even if you missed the yearend deadline for a 2021 tax deduction, you can still make a contribution for the current Rotary year.  Remember part of your contribution comes back to our Club to fund our service programs. Ray Zeiss has announced that starting April 1, any member who is currently $500 or less away from a $1000 contribution, can become a Paul Harris Fellow with credits from our past EREY contributions; also, contributions of less than $500 will also be matched.

RC Wilmette Harbor Book Drive
The Rotary Club of Wilmette Harbor has partnered with Open Books Chicago to collect books.  Open Books sells books and distributes free books through its literacy and book grant programs.  They give away 2.5 books for every 3 they sell.  They welcome any sellable book in good condition, but NOT old travel books, encyclopedias or torn/worn-out books. Children's books are especially welcome.

Drop off day is Saturday, January 29th from 9am- 11am.  Location is Hong Kong Auto Service, 3500 Lake Avenue, Wilmette (corner of Lake and Laramie).  Enter the parking lot from Laramie, and Rotary volunteers will help to unload your books.
Be Careful Out there
Winter just dumped some more snow on us.  Be careful if you decide to shovel snow. Priority #1 in snow shoveling is safety, followed closely by comfort and efficiency. Consider doing the following before you even step outside:
  1. Stretch your muscles to prevent injury (calves, back, shoulders)
  2. Dress in layers to stay warm.
  3. Vow to take breaks: Continuous or heavy snow shoveling can strain your cardiovascular system.
  4. "Wax" your shovel blade, making it slippery and thereby preventing snow from sticking to it. Although candle wax, floor wax, or car wax may be used, Pam spray works fine, too.
