Two of our members have stepped up to help with the the new SPOKE. Jackie Granat has volunteered to summarize our latest programs, submit interesting articles and assist in getting info about Wilmette businesses. Joe Ceisel has volunteered to report on Member News and get information about Wilmette businesses as well. Both Joe and Jackie were scribes for the old Spoke, under the direction of Roland Catenacci. Any member with stories or information for the Spoke, should contact Joe, Jackie or Debora by the Friday following each meeting. Your editor is very grateful for the wonderful assistance of these two members.
Reminder: First meeting for the Big Book Drive is this week, Wednesday, September 4 following the club meeting. For more information. contact Maurice Sullivan (847-570-4719 or mauricewsullivan@aol.com . As in past years, all members and their friends are encouraged to assist in collecting and sorting books. These books are delivered to inner-city schools for students from K through high school. The Big Book Drive runs from October 1 to November 16.
We want to thank another Wilmette business for donating every year to our fundraising efforts. This business also is owned by our own Marv Daniels, who has been a member of our club for over 33 years. This is how his business began.
Daniels Auto Service began in 1939 when two brothers, John and Marv Daniels Sr., left the family farm in Athens, Georgia for Detroit Michigan in the late 1920’s. John, the eldest, a natural at mechanics, took his younger brother, Marvin to Detroit to find employment in the automotive trade. They earned a living successfully until the onslaught of the Great Depression. Word spread that employment opportunities were still available in the Chicago area, so they moved to Wilmette, where Daniels Auto Service was established over 70 years ago. To this day it is still owned and operated by Marv.
As mentioned, Marv has been a member of our club for over 33 years, serving many years as head of the Community Service Committee. He is famous for bringing an elephant to the Wilmette Community Fair to give rides. We wish him many years of continued success in business. JC
Why join Rotary? Prospective members and current members share the same motives for joining a Rotary club. First and foremost is the desire to serve a greater good, by supporting and working for causes that benefit those less fortunate and in need. A close second is the friendship that is developed with like-minded people; this includes personal relationships as well as business connections.
Our 95-year-old club has accomplished a lot of wonderful things, and helped untold numbers of people locally and world-wide. We are always looking for new members who share our enthusiasm for making the world a better place. All our members share responsibility for maintain a vibrant and energetic club. Whether you are a long-time member or just considering membership, we welcome your enthusiasm and participation!
One of the most basic tools of modern health care is the x-ray. Since its discovery just over a century ago, x-ray technology has either improved — or in many cases saved — the lives of millions of people around the world. In the world’s industrialized nations, accessible and affordable x-ray technology is largely taken for granted. Even children understand what an x-ray is and what it does. For the rest of the world, this is not the case.
Recognizing the enormous impact the lack of accessible x-ray technology has on personal health, Rotarians in our Rotary District 6440have developed an ambitious project with a simple goal: Make sure poor people around the world have access to x-ray technology starting with the rural poor in one country, Guatemala, and expanding the effort to other countries.
To achieve this goal, Rotary leaders in District 6440 have created HealthRays®, an exciting new template for action in Guatemala that combines traditional hands-on volunteer strategies with multi-sector, multi-organization partnerships, including Guatemala’s Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), international Rotary Districts, and individual Rotary clubs. Together, these partners will buy and install 29 digital x-ray units to serve the rural poor in Guatemala.
A key factor in the project is the use of digitally-based diagnostic radiology units, which will dramatically expand the reach of health service to rural and poor Guatemalans by allowing their x-ray images to be read by physicians far from the physical location of remote x-ray clinics, via the Internet. The project is anticipated to cost $2.5 million to complete. Eventually, project organizers hope to expand their efforts to other nations around the world.
Joe Ceisel - Joe and his wife Marcia recently went on a very pleasant vacation for two weeks to the Seattle area. After a leisurely 45 hours on Amtrak ( one of best yet experiences with Amtrak ) we arrived in Seattle. Mostly we helped Marcia's 95 year old father with a few things around the house He still lives on his own and has virtually no chronic health issues. We had a great time just visiting and cooking and attending to a few miscellaneous tasks. Hope we are all doing so well at 95.
We heard how this not-for-profit organization was founded by two high-school students a few years ago when they realized that children in developing countries lacked an essential tool for education: the humble pencil. They started collecting pencils. Now finishing their college education and heading for a business career and graduate school, Zoe Engel and Ilana Greenberg spoke of their program having spread beyond the original country of distribution in Guatemala, where it was initiated. It has now served children in Honduras, Cuba, Haiti, Morocco, Mali, Niger, the Dominican Republic, and Malawi where some 200,000 pencils were sent to 16 schools serving 20,000 students. Most pencils were collected from friends and family with some being purchased from manufacturers in China.
What is next? To help support the financial needs of the program, laptop stickers based on designs from children’s thank you notes have been developed for sale, as have pencils with similar patterns. The young entrepreneurs closed their presentation with a quote from Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon which can be used to change the world." JG

Don’t forget to make your contribution for this Rotary year. We’ve got a limited amount of time to reach our goal for the new Rotary year, so there is no reason to wait until the last minute.
Let’s remember that our Club is committed for a specific amount for EREY contributions each year. So if we members don’t do it, the club will have to take it out of the Foundation funds. As you all know, the contribution we get from R.I. for our outreach programs are based on the E.R.E.Y. funds we contribute.
Remember to make checks payable to Rotary Club of Wilmette Foundation, which makes your contribution fully tax-deductible. Questions and checks should be directed to John Flanagin.
Remember when you purchase items through Amazon.com, you can designate the Wilmette Rotary Club Foundation to get an automatic .5% of your purchase, at no additional cost to you.
Here’s how - instead of going to www.Amazon.com, go to www.Smile.Amazon.com. On your first visit to AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com), you need to select the Wilmette Rotary Club Foundation (or other charitable organization) to receive donations from eligible purchases (and almost everything is eligible for this) before you begin shopping. Amazon will remember your selection, and then every eligible purchase you make at smile.amazon.com will result in a donation.
