Rotary Hope Walk for the Homeless Update
As pledges continue to roll in, our gross proceeds should exceed $14,000!  Special thanks again to the RAD group for their help with this event; Laurie Cavalier alone solicited $4140, Kurt Zoller $1050, and as a group donated an additional $800.  Combined, our noon club donated $4,750 (including a generous contribution from Bob Taylor of $1550 and pledges from John Kilner's friends of $500). Rich Lalley and his pledges (from the Winnetka/Northfield Rotary) contibuted $726. Members of the Rotary Clubs of Wilmette Harbor and Evanston Lighthouse combined donated $1125.

May 18 Program - Dr. Rodney Adam
Dr. Adam spoke to us about how he determined the truth about Covid 19 for his medical team in Kenya which began in March 2020. Dr. Adam developed a team of physicians to try to understand the virus. During this process, they addressed the quality of studies and potential biases. Dr. Adam identified the typical biases that people form upon hearing untruths and lies that support their pre-conceived ideas. By identifying the true facts about Covid, the team was able to treat patients and none of the 3000 staff members were lost to the virus.
Next Lunch Packing September 6
Our RAD group's ongoing project to pack lunch bags fo the homeless has a new schedule.  It is now a MONTHLY project.  The next packing date is September 6. They will continue to meet at St. Joseph's Church on Lake Avenue at 6pm on the designated days.  Most nights, the group and other volunteers have packed and delivered 100-150 lunches. Volunteers are welcome. Contact Mariana Al Far (marianafar@gmail.com) if you would like to participate. A RAD member meeting will follow the lunch packing.

They will continue to do this the 1st Tuesday of the month, but our goal is to pass this off to another local group who we will train and pay for the food for them to pack.  Mariana has been in touch with the moderators for a special needs group of students at New Trier who are looking for a project to take on.  We have to wait until school is back in session to discuss this with them and see how soon they can take over.  Mariana will contact St. Joseph Church and confirm we only need the Joseph Room on the 2nd Tuesday of the month instead of every Tuesday.

Petition Request - Connections for the Homeless
We received the following from the Evanston Lighthouse Rotary Club, which were part of our fundraiser for the homeless on May 14.   They are seeking help with a petition to support the purchase and use of the Margarita Inn, operated by Connections for the Homeless (which our Club also supports) as a Bridge Housing Program. This program assists homeless neighbors move to safe, secure housing. Without the Margarita Inn, these homeless individuals would be “on the street.”

The petition states:
“We support the purchase of the Margarita Inn by Connections for the Homeless to operate their Bridge Housing program. The Margarita Inn was established as a rooming house in 1927 and will continue to be used as such for people experiencing homelessness while they receive the services and support needed to move into stable housing elsewhere.
“We support municipal action to make this use of the Margarita Inn possible through zoning and other support as quickly as possible.
“Throughout the Pandemic, Connections for the Homeless heroically stepped up to provide shelter for more than 300 people experiencing homelessness. They transitioned from providing shelter for 18 men at Hilda’s Place -- to providing COVID shelter in multiple hotels -- to running an innovative housing program with individual rooms at the Margarita Inn.
“Since 2020, 184 homeless individuals have been served at the Margarita Inn, including men, women, and children.  The current waitlist is 50 to 80 people.
“Every resident at the Margarita Inn has a Case Manager who guides the process for exiting into stable housing.   Services include on-site physical and mental health care via licensed health care practitioners, medical referrals, support groups, three daily meals, laundry services, linkages to educational services, legal support, substance abuse treatment, and childcare.

Please reply to amweatherhead@gmail.com to add your name and names of others in your household, including ZIP Code, to the petition in support of the purchase of the Margarita Inn by Connections for the Homeless.  Your reply would be appreciated prior to May 25th which is the next meeting of the Land Use Commission.
EREY Link

This month is the last chance to make a contribution for the current Rotary year.  Remember part of your contribution comes back to our Club to fund our service programs. Ray Zeiss has announced that starting April 1, any member who is currently $500 or less away from a $1000 contribution, can become a Paul Harris Fellow with credits from our past EREY contributions; also, contributions of less than $500 will also be matched.
