One of the organizations our club supports is Community Partnerships for Settlement Strategies (COMPASS) )which helps legal refugees to the US get settled with education, jobs, and housing assistance. Here are two recent examples of how COMPASS works. Layla Ahmed – COMPASS provided funds in 2020 to enable Layla to complete her Medical Assistant certification. Layla is single mother of four from Syria. Baren, her daughter, just completed her first year at UIC. Layla also has three sons. The eldest, Maher, will be a high school senior this fall and is exploring coding programs. Layla would like to buy a home in Skokie. COMPASS has guided the family in doing a Homebuying Education Class through Community Partners for Affordable Housing. They are now working to arrange a meeting towards the end of this month between Layla’s family and the community sponsors. The goal of the meeting is to work out a financial plan so that she can purchase a home in September. Zidan Family – last year COMPASS provided support when Jamil Zidan lost his job as a dishwasher at Northwestern. Based on COMPASS's research on careers and affordable living, the Zidan family moved to Rockford. COMPASS awarded the Zidan family a $3,000 grant in April to support their rent in monthly installments of $500 as Jamil transitions to a career in the food industry. His goal is to open up a small kebab shop. |
