Rebecca Crall is Rotary International's Area of Focus Manager for Peace building and Conflict Prevention (PCP). Her work as Area of Focus Manager centers on the strategic growth of the PCP portfolio with an emphasis on the development of the Rotary strategic partnership with the Institute for Economics and Peace. Peace is a global need if one considers that conflicts involved 70 million displaced people in 2019 when the economic cost of violence was $14.1 trillion. This represents a 30% increase in violent conflict since the end of the Cold War.
Recipients of Rotary Peace Fellowships ’s mission is to share a vision of sustainable peace. To achieve this goal, Rotary partners with 7 leading universities worldwide to develop leaders for peace. Rebecca explained that along with the Institute for Economics and Peace, Rotary has developed concepts for measuring peace into its positive and negative aspects. Negative peace provides security and the absence or fear of violence. Positive peace focuses on attitudes, institutions, and structures that create and sustain peaceful societies. Measurements were taken in 150 countries to identify top factors connected with high levels of peace. The Eight Pillars of Positive Peace are: Low levels of corruption, acceptance of the rights of others, free flow of information, a strong business environment, high levels of human capital, equitable distribution of resources, good relations with neighbors and a well functioning government.
Due to health concerns, our participation in The Caring Closet at Oakton Community College has been suspended. We are hoping to begin collecting these necessary items again soon.

Random Acts of Kindness Day February 17th. Plan now to be part of this district-wide endeavor to spread kindness throughout our area. Participation in this event is one of the optional community service components of the Public Image matching grant. The idea is for all the Rotary clubs in the entire District to be doing something as a Random Act of Kindness (RAK) on that one day.
Our club will be serving dinner at Just Harvest again this year as our RAK. Please contact Frank Candioto to coordinate carpooling to North Rogers Park. We will need about 5 volunteers to do the serving. Other members should create some form of RAK for that week, and report to the club at a meeting or through the Spoke. There are dozens of way to show kindness above and beyond.
John Held from Australia: Have now checked off my bucket list: snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef and visiting a world sanctuary rain forest while staying two days in Cairns ( pronounced “Canes”). Raining, hot and humid but luckily no serious rainfall while here except at night. Flying home on the 12th, via Sydney to Auckland, and then direct to Chicago.
The 2020 KidsAgainstHungerfood packaging event is scheduled for Saturday, March 14, 2020, 11am to 1pm at the Winnetka Community House, 670 Lincoln Ave., Winnetka. We are sponsoring this event again this year. This project, which our club has participated in for several years, packages food supplements for hungry and malnourished children in Nicaragua. It's always a fun gathering. Our Satellite Club will be there with almost 24 participants. This event is free to our members since we are sponsoring the event.
Welcome!
