We want to thank Terry Prange, General Manager of Office Depot, for his generous donation to our Big Book Drive. Terry has donated all the book boxes we have used for the past two years to pack our collected books for Chicago's inner city schools. Terry's donation has saved us $750 each year. Office Depot has established a beautiful new co-working area in it's store at 2722 Green Bay Road in Evanston. Anyone can rent an office or dedicated desk on a monthly basis, a conference room by the hour, or a small desk for daily use. Amenities include a kitchen area with coffee, soft drinks, and snacks. Terry is pictured with Coworking Business Manager, Elaine Kemna-Irish. Additionally, Terry will be applying for membership in our club.
Our highly successful Big Book Drive begins on October 1 and ends on November 15, 2019. As in past years, all members and their friends are encouraged to assist in collecting and sorting books. These books are delivered to inner-city schools for students from K through high school. Many are used in libraries; some are given to the students to take home.
All who can help, please mark your calendars for our “launch” meeting on Wednesday, September 4 right after our regular Rotary meeting. An agenda will be available and all questions will be answered then. If you have any questions prior to our September 4 meeting, please contact Maurice Sullivan (847-570-4719 or mauricewsullivan@aol.com). WE NEED YOU!
Jackie Granat was dismayed when one of our scholarship checks for Elizabeth Loehrer, was returned marked "unknown at this address". She did some sleuthing and found out that the check was misdirected by US Post Office. Working with Elizabeth’s counselor, Regina’s registrar, & the student’s mother, Jackie was able to meet the awardee at her home and finally give her the check. Elizabeth is a graduating senior at Regina Dominican, and will be studying Computer Science at University of Michigan.
Why join Rotary? Prospective members and current members share the same motives for joining a Rotary club. First and foremost is the desire to serve a greater good, by supporting and working for causes that benefit those less fortunate and in need. A close second is the friendship that is developed with like-minded people; this includes personal relationships as well as business connections.
Our 95-year-old club has accomplished a lot of wonderful things, and helped untold numbers of people locally and world-wide. We are always looking for new members who share our enthusiasm for making the world a better place. All our members share responsibility for maintain a vibrant and energetic club. Whether you are a long-time member or just considering membership, we welcome your enthusiasm and participation!
We learned about the 2019 Rotary International Convention last week from Jim Waite. He described how utterly amazing and eye-opening it was. Next year's convention is in Honolulu, Hawaii. It will be a wonderful opportunity to really know what Rotary is all about, and have some fun as well. Click on the link, Rotary International Convention for more information about this event.

Write the Future is a 501(c)(3) approved non-profit based out of Chicago, Illinois. We work to build strong partnerships with schools in impoverished areas internationally. They collect and send pencils to these impoverished schools. This method allows the students to have the writing utensils they need to meet their educational needs. We will hear a progress report on what this new endeavor has been doing.
Don’t forget to make your contribution for this Rotary year. We’ve got a limited amount of time to reach our goal for the new Rotary year, so there is no reason to wait until the last minute.
Let’s remember that our Club is committed for a specific amount for EREY contributions each year. So if we members don’t do it, the club will have to take it out of the Foundation funds. As you all know, the contribution we get from R.I. for our outreach programs are based on the E.R.E.Y. funds we contribute.
Remember to make checks payable to Rotary Club of Wilmette Foundation, which makes your contribution fully tax-deductible. Questions and checks should be directed to John Flanagin.
Remember when you purchase items through Amazon.com, you can designate the Wilmette Rotary Club Foundation to get an automatic .5% of your purchase, at no additional cost to you.
Here’s how - instead of going to www.Amazon.com, go to www.Smile.Amazon.com. On your first visit to AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com), you need to select the Wilmette Rotary Club Foundation (or other charitable organization) to receive donations from eligible purchases (and almost everything is eligible for this) before you begin shopping. Amazon will remember your selection, and then every eligible purchase you make at smile.amazon.com will result in a donation.
