Rotary Club of Wilmette partners with the Wilmette Public Library
The Rotary Club of Wilmette is a community partner in the Wilmette Library's annual community-wide reading and discussion program known as One Book, Everybody Reads. This year's book is Claire of the Sea Light by Edwidge Danticat. There will be a series of programs leading up to a visit from the author on May 4. A copy of the book is being shared among interested members, or you may borrow a copy from the library. A schedule of events is attached.
As part of its 2014 One Book, Everybody Reads program, the Wilmette Public Library presents a series of events related to Claire of the Sea Light by two-time National Book Award finalist Edwidge Danticat. Unless otherwise noted, all programs are free and open to the public and will be held in the Wilmette Public Library Auditorium, 1242 Wilmette Avenue.
March 30 at 2 pm - Haiti: An Insider’s Perspective. Griselda Garibay, Advancement Coordinator for the Vincentian Family Haiti Initiative, gives insight into Haiti's past, present and future and describes how the organization empowers Haitians to create better lives for themselves.
April 8 at 10:30 am - Classics and Contemporary Book Discussion Group. A staff librarian leads a discussion of Claire of the Sea Light.
April 22 at 2 pm, repeated at 7 pm - Trees That Feed: Making a Difference in Haiti and Beyond. Local residents and founders Mary and Michael McLaughlin describe their global nonprofit organization, which plants breadfruit trees in Haiti and other countries to feed people, create jobs, and benefit the environment. An Earth Day program, co-sponsored by Go Green Wilmette.
April 27 at 2 pm - The Real Vodou: A Haitian Classical Music Concert. Explore Haiti through music with Crossing Borders Music Collective, which will present string quartets by Haitian composers and, through narrative, images, and video, explore the rich culture of Haitian Vodou that inspired their music.
April 28 at 7 pm - Fourth Monday Book Discussion. A staff librarian leads a discussion of Claire of the Sea Light.
May 1 at 7 pm - A Taste of Haiti. Owners Yvon and Ernst Medard of Leonie’s Delice Bakery in Evanston present the flavors of Haiti with tastings of sweet and savory treats. Seating is limited. Register using the Library’s online calendar or call (847) 256-6930 beginning April 12.
May 4 at 2 pm - Author Visit. Author Edwidge Danticat discusses her novel, Claire of the Sea Light. The Book Stall at Chestnut Court will have books available for purchase, and a book signing will be held following the program. Please note that this program will be held at the Wilmette Junior High School, 620 Locust Road, Wilmette. Wilmette and Kenilworth residents who wish to attend the event may pick up a maximum of 2 free tickets at the Library’s Recent Arrivals Desk beginning Saturday, April 26. Any remaining tickets will be available to non-residents beginning Thursday, May 1. No phone reservations will be taken. Ticketed seats will be held until 5 minutes before the event; at that time, all unfilled seats will be open to the public.
One Book Everybody Reads is funded by the Friends of the Wilmette Public Library.
