Fishing Well Scholars attended the Rotary Club of Schaumburg-Hoffman Estates last month.  They, along with their mentors, shared insights into what this program means to the scholars and to our club.

The ancient  Chinese proverb, "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime." is the cornerstone for the Fishing Well Scholarship Program undertaken by the Rotary Club of Schaumburg-Hoffman Estates, in cooperation with Harper College.  This program is nearing the conclusion of its third successful year of providing scholarships for adult students who are returning to school to enhance their skills in specific fields that will provide them with greater economic opportunities and equip them to move into fields where companies and organizations are seeking trained and motivated workers.  It is a win-win situation.  The scholars are better able to support themselves and their families and the community benefits by having a skilled workforce that is attractive to business and industry.

In addition to the financial assistance provided, the students each have a Rotarian mentor who stays in touch with the student throughout the year.  This has been a rewarding part of the program for students and mentors alike.  For more information on this program, please contact the club (RotaryClubofSchEH@gmail.com or Harper College (lchilver@harpercollege.edu).
