SUNDAY IS FUN-DAY at Shermerfest

October 1st...will be a day that shows
the community what Rotary is about!

Our club will be hosting the RILEE Iron Lung Display at Shermerfest all day and the Ducky Race kicks off at 3 PM!

This display is being used as an educational tool that will illustrate Rotary's primary mission - To End Polio NOW!

We need volunteers to set up and man the tents in the morning.  Donna Lee Gulley will be coordinating the Purple Pinkie -interactive opportunity. We have Rotary crayons, Polio coloring pages and End Polio Now Stickers for kids!

VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED
  • Bring friends, family, co-workers to enjoy the day with you!!
  • Please use your social media to reach contacts to join in the fun!
  • RILEE (Rotary Iron Lung Education Exhibit)
  • Iron Lungs were LIFE SAVING, the idea is to spark an emotional connection between youth (Post Polio generation in the U.S.) to Rotary’s international work.
  • Rotary International’s LARGEST and most extensive International project is to END POLIO
  • In 1988 Rotary created a partnership with the WHO, CDC & UNICEF
  • At that time 125 countries still had polio with 350,000 cases a year
  • Polio is caused by 1 of 3 viruses that only live in the human intestine and is
  • spread from person to person.
  • It cannot be cured, but it can be prevented by vaccine.
  • Since 1985 Rotary has contributed more than $1.7 Billion to eliminate polio Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation match Rotary’s contribution 2:1
  • Today, there are only two countries that have never stopped transmission of the wild polio virus: Afghanistan and Pakistan.
  • The polio cases represented by the remaining one percent are the most difficult to prevent, due to factors including geographical isolation, poor public infrastructure, armed conflict and cultural barriers.
  • Until polio is eradicated, all countries remain at risk of outbreaks.
Our funds support incredible projects around the world!

COMMUNIITY BOOK DRIVE - ROTARY & BERNIE'S BOOK BANK
Friday, September 22, 2023

BERNIE'S BOOK BANK.....I want to thank everyone who helped out last Friday at the incredibly successful book drive for Bernie's Book Bank.  Volunteering that day were Bev Hides-Moriello, Court Williams, Lauren Bonner, Helen Rivkin, Padmini Malladi, Donna Gulley, Dave Vishny, Jodi Joffe, Sandra Whitmore, John Howard, Larry Hewitt and Pete Samuelson.  Together we processed over 9,000 donated books, and of those books, Bernie's will be able to use at least 7,000!

Satellite Service Events for All Rotarians to Join in on!

NOTE FROM NSSRA -
The NSSRA Run for All 5K is fast approaching! This is not a sanctioned 5k, it's a fun run for our families to enjoy with their loved ones. Registration just closed and we have about 25 racers signed up. This is a small but mighty group! 🙂

Date: Sunday October 8th
Volunteer timeframe: 8:30am-11:00am
Location: Glenview Park Center 2400 Chestnut, Glenview
Volunteer duties that we are looking to fill include:
  • Set up & take down of signs, track markers, timing system, etc.
  • Check in & registration
  • Handing out water and snacks
  • Motivators- placed around the course cheering on the runners
We anticipate needing between 8-12 volunteers. If we have more than 12, the more "motivators" the merrier but there won't be a lot of actual duties to fill.

OPERATION SANTA CLAUS.....Yes, OSC is back for 2023, with some modifications, and your support in bringing the gift of literacy to children in under-served communities will be greatly appreciated.  As always, donations will be needed, as we have already purchased the books for 90 Spanish speaking preschoolers.  We will also have wish lists available for about 130 English speaking preschoolers, and another 110 wish lists from first through sixth grade children who participate in the Study Buddies program at Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook.

CLEANING WITH MEANING..... Jodi is coordinating this event with Gratitude Generation this coming Saturday, 09/30/23, at 9:30 AM.  Please contact Jodi if you would like to help out.

DUCK SORTING......We need to sort the ducks on Wednesday, 09/27/23, starting at 9:00 AM.  We will be at the Park District building at 545 Academy Drive in Northbrook.  If you have an hour or two to spare that morning, your help will be greatly appreciated.

RUBBER DUCKY RACE.....The more of you who show up for the race, the better will be the outcome.  You know this is happening next Sunday, 10/01/23, at 3:00 PM, in the Village Green.  Even if you have not signed up to help, come anyway.  Many hands make light work, and there is always a lot to do before, during and after the race.

DUCK PACKING...On Wednesday, 10/04/23, we will once again gather at the Park District (545 Academy Drive) to pack up our ducks and put them away.  If you are available, please come and help.
