Partnership Proposal between Rotary and People’s Water Data and more...
People’s Water Data (PWD) is a global, community-driven initiative co-founded by IIT Madras, Tel Aviv University, and KMCH Research Foundation.
Launched in 2023, PWD trains students to test drinking water in their communities and upload results to an open, geo-tagged platform. This effort builds both water literacy and a skilled workforce for sustainable development.
In just two years, over 2,000 students have tested 10,000 water sources across India, Israel, and Uganda. Each student becomes a “water warrior,” combining science education, community action, and digital tools to ensure safe water for all values that closely align with Rotary’s mission.
In many communities, drinking water at the point of use household taps, containers, and filters goes untested. People’s Water Data addresses this "last mile" by engaging students in testing for bacteria, turbidity, and toxic metals. The results are shared with families and uploaded to a public dashboard, sparking local action.
Proposed Activities : train youth leaders in each district to lead local water campaigns. Water Literacy Drives: host joint events at schools and community centers, using PWD’s kits and platform. Rotary-Verified Water Maps: display student-collected data with Rotary logos in community dashboards.
Micro-grants for Impact: support water treatment or tank-cleaning drives where contamination is found. Impact Goals for 2 Years • Train 10,000 Rotary-affiliated students. • Reach 100,000 households (400,000 individuals). • Build water quality maps in 100+ Rotary districts. • Improve water safety and hygiene practices through awareness and follow-up.
MOTION: The Rotary Club of Northbrook agrees to be the International Partner with host Rotary Club of Beer Sheva Israel for this Global Grant for People’s Water Data and that, if and when the Global Grant is approved, we support it with $1,500 in cash and an equal amount in 1,500 of DDF. Total cost estimated to be $50,000-80,0000.
PROJECT #2 Rotary Hearing Clinic GG 2681520
Host Club - La Romana Rio Dulce, Dominican Republic
International Host Club – Evanston Lighthouse
David Baker, MD, MPH
The main objective of this Global Grant is to establish a permanent Hearing Clinic in the Good Samaritan Hospital in La Romana, Dominican Republic (DR).
This work builds on over two decades of work by Roger and Elizabeth Fagan, who travelled to La Romana intermittently to provide audiology services.
Having permanent equipment and technicians will better serve the community and will make it easier for audiologists to come to La Romana to volunteer.
Hearing deficits are substantially more common among children in developing countries. This is due to infections before and after birth, lack of oxygen at birth, jaundice, nutritional deficiencies, etc.
Babies with hearing problems don’t develop language normally and struggle to learn. Some are labeled mentally disabled. Untreated hearing difficulties in adults can make it hard to work and can lead to social isolation.
This grant will buy equipment and support training to establish a permanent Hearing Clinic in Good Samaritan Hospital. It will benefit all hearing-impaired members of the community, serving at least 500 people per year.
The equipment will allow screening of young children, including newborns, so even very young children can be treated before they enter school, preventing permanent learning disabilities and delays.
Total budget - $132,057 Funding committed as of 10/23/25- $48,646 (including$11,794 World Fund match for $14,742 DDF) Rotary clubs that have provided funding: La Romana Rio Dulce, Evanston Lighthouse/District 6440, Pleasant Valley, District 3201, Bath, Bath Sunrise, District 4185, Puebla Industrial, Coimbatore Texcity, Naperville, and Kelowna Sunrise.
