MESSAGE FROM DENIS:  Fellow Rotarians,   As you  know Rick Rivkin is providing Zoom access to our weekly meetings. Each week there is a need for two assistants. Our Zoom assistants who are presently available to help Rick are Gayle, Elke, Debbie and Ed. Mike and Andy are on the team, but are unavailable to assist at present.

We have a DIRE need for more assistants. The task consists of helping Rick with the Zoom equipment before and after the meetings and handling the microphone during the speaking segment of our meetings. The goal is to have enough volunteers so that this task does not overly burden anyone. If you want to volunteer for this team or need more information you can reach me at 847-498-5420, Denis

Operation Warm Needs Our Help

Operation Warm Needs Our Help

Operation Warm program that gives new coats to Chicago area children and probably Afghan refugees at a military base in Indiana. It is Oct 15 at Valley Lo Club in Glenview and features the great Gerald McLendon’ “The Soulkeeper,” and his great band. They play ‘60s and ‘70s R&B and Soul music that’s great to dance and sing to.  Best to purchase tickets (only $60 and it includes dinner and provides new coats to 3 kids!) by next Friday Oct 8 since that’s when we give head count to the kitchen.

Biodiversity Loss a Rotary Concern

Fact for the Day:

Subject: Biodiversity Loss

A report launched in February 2021 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in partnership with Compassion in World Farming called “Food System Impacts on Biodiversity Loss” focuses on three actions that can combat the looming threats of biodiversity loss and climate change:
  1. Global dietary patterns need to move towards more plant-heavy diets.
  2. More land needs to be protected and set aside for nature. The greatest gains for biodiversity will occur when we preserve or restore whole ecosystems.
  3. We need to farm in a more nature-friendly, biodiversity-supporting way, limiting the use of inputs and replacing monoculture with polyculture farming practices. Dietary change is necessary to enable land to be returned to nature, and to allow widespread adoption of nature-friendly farming without increasing the pressure to convert natural land to agriculture.
