Last Regular Meeting
Last Regular Meeting- We had an Avenues of Service meeting and learned about our club’s projects. President elect Scott Rose presided over the meeting.
From the Community Service Committee:
Please consider being a volunteer for the following community  service projects.
The Northbrook Symphony Orchestra needs  2 volunteers for each performance to distribute free bottles of water during intermissions.
Performances will be held at the Sheely Center at Glenbrook North High School.  Volunteers should arrive at 3:30pm and expect to be there until at least 5:15pm.
Concerts are scheduled on January 28th, March 25th, and May 6th.  Volunteers get free admission to the concert.
The Northbrook Public Library needs volunteers to help as ushers at its film and music programs.  The events are held on Wednesdays and weekends.  Your commitment would involve 1-2 shifts per week for about 2-3 hours at a time.  Ushers, of course, get to see the show!
If you’re interested in either of these projects, please contact Dave Masters.

Schools and Clean Water
An estimated 2.5 billion people lack access to improved sanitation facilities that hygienically separate human excreta from human contact.
Rotarian Alfredo Pérez knows the schools in Guatemala and neighboring countries can use all the help available in this area.  The Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) in Schools Target Challenge focuses on providing clean water and sanitation systems, and equipping teachers to educate students on better hygiene practices.  “The objective of the project is to develop good hygiene habits in children,” Pérez says. “By reducing absenteeism due to diseases that are acquired due to lack of water, sanitation, and hygiene in schools, we can increase their academic development. Training teachers to help children develop good hygiene habits is key.”
Paul Harris
Born in Racine, Wisconsin, on 19 April 1868, Paul P. Harris was the second of six children of George N. and Cornelia Bryan Harris.
In 1896, he settled in Chicago and opened a law practice. Along with Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram Shorey, he founded the Rotary Club of Chicago in 1905 and was elected its president in 1907.
Club membership grew rapidly. Many members were originally from small towns and found an opportunity for fellowship in the Chicago club. Harris was convinced that the club could be expanded into a service movement and strove to extend Rotary to other communities.
Harris died on 27 January 1947, leaving a rich legacy of fellowship, professionalism, service, and friendship. His passing also sparked an outpouring of donations to the Rotary Foundation from all over the world, allowing the Foundation to greatly expand its programs and services.
