The State of Antisemitism -What you need to Know Now
The Rotary Club of Northbrook invites all to join us for a special Rotary Club lunch meeting on November 15th when Trent Spoolistra, Anti-Defamation League [ADL], will discuss the current situation surrounding antisemitism from regional, national, and international levels.
This is a relevant topic and one we need to share NOW. In fact – if people used the Four Way test in their day-to-day life we might be able to end hate and racism. We have so much work to do. Let’s start by attending this important meeting and inviting friends from other clubs to come hear this message.
Trent Spoolstra is the Associate Regional Director for the Midwest office of the Anti-Defamation League in charge of young leadership development and Jewish community relations.
Two key facts Trent will address in his presentation:
2021 saw the highest levels of antisemitic incidents in over 40 years
Part of the reason for continued antisemitism is the continuation of common Jewish stereotypes that large segments of the American population believe

“Fighting hate does not require too much of time or energy. Rather, there are many simple steps you can take to be a positive force for change. Below are five simple steps you can take right now:
Add your voice to our advocacy efforts and be heard in Congress.
Engage in meaningful conversations with your coworkers, family, and community.
Report an anti-Semitic, bias or discriminatory incident.
Educate yourself about hate symbols and bias-motivated crimes.
Organize an ADL training in your community.”
Our Rotary Club invites you to attend this important event. Tickets [$25] must be purchased in advance, are non-refundable, walk-ins cannot be accommodated. The lunch meeting is held at Hilton Chicago/Northbrook, 2855 Milwaukee Ave, Northbrook, IL, 60062. Check-in is noon, and the meeting runs from 12:15-1:30 pm and will include Q&A.
Trent Spoolstra Presenter Bio: He leads the region’s young leadership class called Glass Leadership Institute, leads the ADL Associate Board, facilitates adolescent training sessions to counter antisemitism, and runs the region’s Signature Synagogue Program. Before coming to ADL, Trent worked in AmeriCorps-VISTA and was a high school history teacher in Texas.
He holds a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Notre Dame and a master's degree in international affairs from the Bush School of Government & Public Service-Texas A&M University.

ShelterBox USA was awarded the 2022 Peace Prize from the United Nations Association of Santa Barbara in acknowledgment of their humanitarian work in the world’s most extreme conflict and disaster zones. Our Rotary Club's own Donna Lee Gulley serves as a Rotary District 6440 ShelterBox Ambassador! She will share her experiences, and answer questions at our meeting Tuesday.
The Village Illuminate Northbrook Night with Rotary & Coat Off Your Back is coming up!
The Village of Northbrook is pleased to present the Illuminate Northbrook Rotary Hot Cocoa Stroll!
Gather in the heart of Northbrook on Friday, November 18, at 5:30pm to kick off the holiday shopping season with complimentary hot chocolate provided by the Rotary Club of Northbrook.
At 6pm, count down with us as we turn on the holiday lights and illuminate downtown Northbrook at the corner of Meadow Road and Shermer Road with Village President Kathryn Ciesla (Shown here with her daughter, Jenna and dad - our own Jim Kucienski)
Before or after the event, stroll the downtown, enjoy the ambience, and support local businesses by shopping and dining. Donors to our Coat Drive receive a coupon page for discounts in local shops to kick off holiday shopping!

It's that time of the year when we reach out to our membership and ask for nominations of people you would like to see as YOUR Board of Directors for the upcoming Rotary Year, beginning July, 2023.
According to our Bylaws:
Section 3 - Nominations by Membership: The board of directors shall distribute a list of offices to which members are to be elected via print and/or email to the general voting membership with a request for nominations for the offices presented, a method of returning the nominations, and a deadline. Nominations so received by the nominating committee shall be reviewed and considered, but they shall not be binding upon it, nor shall a tabulation of these nominations be published to the general membership, nor shall any campaigning by or for any member be allowed and/or encouraged.
All Positions are open, except for that of President and Immediate Past President.
