For the past couple of years, the Rotary Club of Northbrook has financially supported the Rotary Club of Mühlacker-Enzkries (Germany) in their continuing commitment to deliver humanitarian aid supplies to Ukraine through Poland. A couple of years ago the German Rotarians presented their program to us over Zoom.
We have been invited to join the Rotary Club of Mühlacker-Enzkreis for their next delivery later this summer.
Here is the plan.
July 31-August 1 – A full truckload of humanitarian aid supplies will be loaded in Mühlacker and driven to Krakow, Poland (1000 km = 10+ hours)
August 2 – We meet the German Rotarians in Krakow Poland. Afternoon sightseeing and dinner in Krakow. Stay overnight every night in a monastery.
August 3 – Travel to the Poland-Ukraine border and transfer the donations from the big truck to smaller minivans. Meet with Father Jan who is handling the distribution of the donations in Ukraine. Return to Krakow.
August 4 – Depart Krakow to visit Auschwitz (75 km), guided tour is approximately 3 ½ hours. On the return journey to Krakow, visit the Wieliczka salt mine (a complete underground city), 3 ½ hour tour. Return to Krakow.
August 5 – Guided tour of the monastery (a World Heritage Site), depart Krakow.
The cost to stay in the monastery is approximately €20 per night (US$21.33). The costs for the Auschwitz tour and the salt mine underground city tour are each approximately €25 (US$26.67). LOT Polish Airlines flies non-stop to Krakow a couple of times a week, and daily connecting in Warsaw. Other airline connections (United, Lufthansa, Air France-KLM, etc.) are also available.

Greetings Fellow Rotarians and Friends!
It was a fantastic weekend to be a Rotarian as Rotary District 6440 experienced a bustling few days. Firstly, a big thank you to the Vocational Scholarship team for their diligent work in interviewing all the candidates who applied. Selections will be announced later this month to club vocational service chairs and published on the District website.
We also hosted over 150 area students at our recent RYLA session at Camp Edwards in East Troy, Wisconsin. During the three-day camp, students immersed themselves in valuable leadership skills through small group activities and engaging with world-class speakers. Many return home with a transformed outlook, eager to make positive impacts in their schools and communities. Thanks to all the clubs that sponsored one or more students. I encourage you to invite them to share their experiences with your club and continue engaging them in future activities and service.
Additionally, we conducted "Springboard to Success," our annual spring training, offering role-based learning opportunities for club chairs and any members interested in committee service. Thanks to all the clubs that sent participants. We urge you to have them share their insights and ideas with fellow club members.
Finally, numerous club gatherings and service projects took place—a clear indication that spring has arrived in the greater Chicagoland area.
As noted above, Rotary’s theme for the month of April is Environmental, which is also one of the seven areas of focus. Rotary is dedicated to supporting activities that bolster the conservation and protection of natural resources, promote ecological sustainability, and cultivate harmony between communities and the environment. Through Rotary’s global grant funding, over $18 million has been allocated to environment-related causes in the past five years, including water, sanitation, and hygiene projects.
District 6440 has enthusiastically embraced this newest Area of Focus with numerous projects and initiatives, led by a highly active Environmental Service Committee. Share your stories by contacting Sam Martinez, Environmental Chair. Also, please join us at the District 6440/6450 Conference, where we will sign the Operation Pollination Agreement for 2024-25.

GiveNKind - help in their new warehouse 1000 Asbury Drive, Unit 5, Buffalo Grove

GiveNKind began as a local movement to help fulfill the needs of Chicagoland nonprofits by matching them with an individual with a specific donated item. Occasionally, GiveNKind received calls from businesses and distributors looking for placements for their excess goods. These calls increased over time. GiveNKind’s programs have evolved to solve large-scale resource issues while providing essential resources to thousands. Today’s GiveNKind reflects a growing commitment to helping people and the environment to transform excess goods into community resources and in 2023, placed over 14 million dollars of resources with local nonprofits that uplight communities.
