Rotary Foundation Recognition: John Howard recognized Larry Hewitt for his ongoing support of the Rotary Foundation. John presented Larry with a pin acknowledging his achivement of reaching Paul Harris level 7.
RILEE: Rotary Iron Lung Education Exhibit:
District Governor Nominee Suzanne Gibson recognized Past District Governor Rick Rivkin and Rotarian Helen Rivkin for being charter sponsors of RILEE.
The hope is that RILEE will spark an emotional connection between our youth—the post polio generation—and Rotary’s signature international project, polio eradication and inspire donations to the End Polio Now campaign.
RILEE has two salient messages to deliver:
• As long as one child is diagnosed with polio, every child in the world is at risk, and
• Immunizations must continue for at least three years after the last diagnosed case.
What Trees can do (from the April issue of the Rotarian)
Planting trees speaks to all of the areas of Rotary’s focus. Research has shown that trees are good for economic and community development – they increase property values. Planting a tree promotes peace simply by giving people a place to sit in the shade and contemplate the world. Trees are good for disease prevention and treatment, because the world is a healthier place with more trees to produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. You can make a case for trees relating to all our areas of focus.
Through academic training, practice, and global networking opportunities, the Rotary Peace Centers program develops leaders who become catalysts for peace and conflict prevention and resolution. These fellowships cover tuition and fees, room and board, round-trip transportation, and all internship and field-study expenses.
In just over a decade, the Rotary Peace Centers have trained more than 1,000 fellows for careers in peace building. Many of them are serving as leaders at international organizations or have started their own foundations.
Most Rotarians have never attended a Rotary district conference. They have, not experienced one of the most enjoyable and rewarding privileges of Rotary membership. A district conference is for all club members and their spouses, not just for club officers and committee members. The purpose of a district conference is for fellowship, good fun, inspirational speakers and discussion of matters that make one's Rotary membership more meaningful. Every person who attends a district conference finds that being a Rotarian becomes even more rewarding because of the new experiences, insights and acquaintances developed at the conference. Those who attend a conference enjoy going back, year after year. Everyone of Rotary's more than 525 districts has a conference annually These meetings are considered so important that the Rotary International president selects a knowledgeable Rotarian as his personal representative to attend and address each conference. The program always includes several outstanding entertainment features, interesting discussions and inspirational programs. One of the added benefits of attending a district conference is the opportunity to become better acquainted with members of one's own club in an informal setting. Lasting friendships grow from the fellowship hour at the district conference.
