Last Regular Meeting-This year's GBN student guests presided over our meeting. We heard about and saw productions done by the school's broadcasting class. Thank you to Dr. Riggle for introducing these dynamic young leaders to us.

SHELTERBOX NOMINATED FOR NOBEL PEACE PRIZE
ShelterBox has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, in recognition of our humanitarian efforts in areas of extreme conflict. ShelterBox is honored to receive this nomination, which is a great acknowledgment that ShelterBox provides much more than material aid – we provide the foundation for recovery and the stability needed for peace, one family at a time.
As one of Rotary International’s longest established partnerships, this nomination is an example of supporting Rotary’s Area of Focus on promoting peace. In his recommendation letter in support of the Nobel Peace Prize Nomination, Rotary International President, Ian Riseley, provided a testimonial for ShelterBox, saying, "ShelterBox is our preferred source of emergency relief of its kind, and we greatly value our partnership. Rotary and ShelterBox have worked together for more than 15 years, providing emergency shelter after disasters in all parts of the world."
The goal of ShelterBox is to keep families and communities together in crisis situations, providing emergency shelter and life-saving supplies to people forcibly displaced from their homes. In 2017 alone, ShelterBox provided aid to families affected by conflict in Syria, Iraq, Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.
While many think of ShelterBox after natural disasters, our longest response has been in Syria, since 2012, providing critically needed shelter and emergency supplies in what is described as the worst humanitarian crisis of our generation.

Comments on Peace by Bernice King (from The Rotarian)
We must have courageous conversations between people of divergent perspectives. It’s not easy work, but it’s necessary work. It doesn’t mean when you leave those encounters that you will necessarily agree with people, but in the end you will develop a better respect for them and ensure that you always leave them with dignity.
Removing the immediate tension and the conflict is one thing, but getting to the root of what created that tension and conflict – and can continue to perpetuate it – is necessary. We need to redistribute power so that it is more equitable. In the work of peace, you don’t want people to just stop fighting. You want them to agree to a new covenant of how to live together with equitable circumstances. That means looking at how power is distributed and agreeing to come up with a strategy and a plan that creates equity among groups of people.
The Rotary International emblem and the word "Rotary" are officially registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as trademarks and "service marks," which gives RI certain rights regarding their use and puts unauthorized individuals on notice against any infringing use. The Rotary emblem should not be altered or modified in any way. Rotarians are encouraged to wear the emblem as a lapel button. It is frequently used on jackets, pens, caps and other personal items manufactured by firms or individuals licensed by the RI Board of Directors.
Rotary badges, banners, road signs and official Rotary club stationery naturally use the emblem as a mark of identification. The Rotary emblem cannot be used for any commercial purpose. It is not permissible to use it in a political campaign or in connection with any other name or emblem not recognized by Rotary International.
Individual Rotarians should not use the Rotary emblem on business cards or stationery or for any other use intended to promote business. Nor is it considered proper for Rotarians to use the emblem on doors or windows of their business premises. It is the responsibility of all Rotarians to use the emblem with pride. The restrictions are provided to assure that the Rotary emblem will not be misused and that it will always bring distinction to the organization.
Most Rotarians have never attended a Rotary district conference. They have, not experienced one of the most enjoyable and rewarding privileges of Rotary membership. A district conference is for all club members and their spouses, not just for club officers and committee members. The purpose of a district conference is for fellowship, good fun, inspirational speakers and discussion of matters that make one's Rotary membership more meaningful. Every person who attends a district conference finds that being a Rotarian becomes even more rewarding because of the new experiences, insights and acquaintances developed at the conference. Those who attend a conference enjoy going back, year after year. Everyone of Rotary's more than 525 districts has a conference annually These meetings are considered so important that the Rotary International president selects a knowledgeable Rotarian as his personal representative to attend and address each conference. The program always includes several outstanding entertainment features, interesting discussions and inspirational programs. One of the added benefits of attending a district conference is the opportunity to become better acquainted with members of one's own club in an informal setting. Lasting friendships grow from the fellowship hour at the district conference.
