Born in Chicago, Illinois, her family moved to Henderson, Texas at the age of 3 where she was raised and graduated High School. After attending college where she earned a degree in Education, she enlisted in the Regular Army serving from  Sept 1987 until her retirement in June 2008.

Her husband Christopher also served and retired from the Army after 25 years.  They live in Highland Park with their  three children,  AeKacia, Elijah and Christina. Sonja was deployed and served in Saudi Arabia, Mogadishu, Somalia, Iraq (3 tours). She loved serving her numerous and leading and training numerous soldiers who have all had great, successful Army careers.

After retirement, Sonja worked as a Program Support Assistant at Army Community Service in Heidelberg, Germany. She taught  Army Family Team Building to military spouses to help guide them in understanding how to navigate being a military spouse and how and why the Army does what it does and how it affects them. This is one of things she is most proud of- being able to help. young Army spouses.

Her family moved from Heidelberg, Germany to Highland Park, IL in 2011 due to her husband being stationed at U.S. Army MEPCOM in North Chicago.  Upon his retirement in 2013, they decided to stay and live in Highland Park because they enjoyed working, living and volunteering on the North Shore.

Sonja is currently serving  as the Jr. Vice Commander for Highland Park American Legion Post 145. She has also been serving as the President of the Highland Park American Legion Auxiliary Unit 145 since 2017. Sonja has a passion for  giving back and being of service to others.

In 2018, Sonja decided to attend Worsham School of Mortuary Science where she obtained her degree and is now working as a Funeral Director/Embalmer. "I take it as an honor with great pleasure and pride in being entrusted to help families at one of the most difficult times of their lives".

Now she looks forward to working and giving back as a Rotarian and has continually lived a life of Service above Self.

For Cubs fans... it was a dark stormy night (under the dome, of course). A great time had by all!!!

Blood Drive Partnership - July 28th at North Chicago Fire Department
The Rotary Club of North Chicago is delighted to partner with the Exchange Club of North Chicago and the City of North Chicago hosting our next blood drive at North Chicago Fire Department on Thursday July 28th from 2- 6 p.m.

Consider this - most of us don't need blood from blood donors.... until we do.  Here is a short list of reasons YOU may need blood, and why it is so important that we support the continuous need for donations:

Your single donation can actually save up to THREE lives!

A cancer patient will need on average 8 units per month - typically needed during chemotherapy treatment.

For a liver transplant patient 100 units are needed.

On average a car accident victim or gun shot victim will need 50 units.  A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood!

That is a very short list, and in the event of an emergency situation the blood supply runs short very quickly, so it is important that a regular supply of donated blood is available.

Simply put, here are the facts:  It's safe.  It's necessary.  It saves lives.  One day it could be your life saved by a blood donor.

If you are unsure about donating blood, have questions or are simply afraid to donate - please ask questions.  Visit here:  Click Here for Information  It is safe, good for your self esteem, and quite frankly - your opportunity to be a hero and serve humanity!!

Thank you for your support - you can register here to schedule your donation:  Click Here to Donate

Walk ins are also welcome!!  Bring a friend!!

Our blood drive coordinator, Heartland Blood Centers is the sole provider of blood products for military medical centers in Northern Illinois.

Furthering the Lives of Youth
Founder Shekedia Jones with Furthering the LIves of Youth visited with the Club today and shared her journey from Waukegan to the Olympics, traveling the world and then on to the inspiration of creating FLY to help youth see a different world of possibility!

Club Immediate Past President Kevin Stevens presents a book to Shakedia that will be donated to the North Chicago Public Library in her honor.

FLY's primary fundraiser is coming up soon!  The Sundress & Linen Affair will take place on Friday, July 8th at Arches Banquet Hall in Waukegan.  Please consider attending or supporting with a sponsorship or donation!   Visit www.flyyouth.org/ for more information.

About FLY

Furthering the Lives of Youth provides promising young people between the ages of 6-18 from disadvantaged backgrounds with life altering supplementary educational instruction, social skills and cultural experiences. The program creates partnerships with local school districts and other municipal government entities along with various community organizations to consistently provide the greatest experience possible for all of our participants.

About Shakedia

FLY Youth Founder Shakedia Jones was born and primarily raised in Waukegan, Illinois.  She grew up in a single parent home with her mother who worked a lot to provide for her children, so Shakedia spent a lot of time at grandmother’s house.  Shakedia witnessed a litany of things from her grandmother’s porch that motivated her to want a different reality, always aspiring to see the world and create a better life for herself.  Shakedia decided early that education would be her way out and worked extremely hard in the classroom.  Hard work placed her on the High Honor Roll throughout my entire Elementary, Middle, and High School Years.

When her cousin introduced her to Track and Field during freshman year of High School, she didn’t see the point of running just to run.  Her cousin, however, convinced her in his own special way to go out for the team.  17 Individual State Titles, an undefeated High School career and a full Track and Field Scholarship to UCLA later, she is confident that he was right.  Thanks in part to her track career and academic success,  Shakedia was able to travel the world and gain access to an unbelievable amount of experiences and resources that helped to expand her world view in ways typically not found in her home city.

Musical Gifts to the Youth of North Chicago

Our special guest today was Charles Benedetti, retired teacher, coach, entertaining graphologist, and dear friend of Rotary.  Charles provided insight on the importance of the written word during his conversation with the Club, and presented two gifts to very appreciative music students of the North Chicago Schools.

Violinist Ebenezer Figureoa has been with her music program for 5 years and will enter the North Chicago Community High School Band program as a freshman this fall.  Jose Bandera is entering the 7th grade and has proven to be a fast learner on the Clarinet, in one year Jose has developed skills to be in the top ensemble in his music program.

This is the second time Charles has visited with The Rotary Club of North Chicago to bestow his gracious musical gifts to the students of North Chicago.  In February of 2015 Charles presented a Viola to Ms. Joyce Coleman, who continues to study her craft and will be a featured guest at an upcoming Club event.

Earn Money For Your Service Organization, Team or Not For Profit Group!!
The Rotary Clubs of North Chicago and Waukegan invite area organizations and groups to join us September 15 - 20th to have fun and raise money for your group!!

We are serving as concessions volunteers on the #15 Green for the BMW Golf Championship at Conway Farms in Lake Forest.  It's a great time, you get to watch some professional golf, enjoy a complimentary meal - and your organization is compensated handsomely for your effort!!  You can click here for more information and to volunteer.

This is a great opportunity for targeted fundraising - such as End Polio Now, uniforms or a specific project!

A few bullet points:

>  Shifts are 7 hours with numerous breaks.  You cannot "split shifts" with another person - each person must be available for their entire shift.

>  15 years and older can volunteer - so youth sports and activity groups are welcome.  There is a requirement that at least half (50%) of the volunteers on each shift be 21 or older, so if you have youth it is helpful if you have parents or adult leaders sign up on a one to one ratio.

>  The amount your organization is paid depends on how much is sold in concessions for the entire tournament, and your group's compensation is an even portion of a commission paid out directly to the organization an a "per shift worked" basis.  We are not guaranteed how much we get paid, however it is a very profitable and fun activity when two or three people sign up - it adds up to hundreds of dollars very quickly!!  Single volunteers are certainly welcome - however the numbers add up quickly when you have two or more!  Each organization leadership will be provided copy of the financials for transparency.  Funds are paid directly to the organization you are representing.

> It is VERY important that you show up to work each shift you volunteer to cover - we are back charged for no shows - and it will negatively impact your organization compensation.

>  You can sign up for as many shifts as you like!!  You cannot work overlapping shifts - one per day (for example, an individual could potentially volunteer for six shifts - which would mean great $$$ for your group).

> Parking and other logistical information will be sent to you after you volunteer - plan on arriving at the remote Tournament parking lot at Fountain Squaare to catch a shuttle no later that 30 minutes prior to your scheduled time slot.  this will allow plenty of time for the 15 minute shuttle ride and check in.

>  All volunteers must follow the dress code and guidelines in the  frequently asked question and answer sheet available at the "BMW Golf Championship Link at Conway Farms" link in the upper left corner of the www.northichicagorotary.org website home page. under "Site Pages."

Thanks for your participation and we'll see you at Conway Farms September 15 -20th!!
