BULLETIN – December 19, 2018

Club President Diana Taylor rang the bell, Scott Adams recited the Pledge, and Carol August led us in prayer. The song was postponed.

 

-John McDonald bragged that Jan Mittelman sent baby wraps to South Africa.

 

-Steve Risley bragged that his daughter in law has a job and the Bears clinched the Central Division. We all wondered where Packer fan Bill Rickert is?

 

-Elliott Pinsel thanked the Club for the support of his gift drive. He recounted a story about a lady at the Ann Kiley Center who thanked him for her gift and gave him a hug.

 

-Elections will be held early next year. We need a President Elect to follow Greg Hill.

 

-There will be no meeting next week. We will be back on January 2^nd.

 

-The next winter Fundraiser meeting will be on 1/3 at 5:30 pm at Diana Taylor’s office.

 

-We received a Christmas card from the bingo participants at Liberty  Towers.

 

-The Civic Center also sent us a Christmas card.

 

Elliott Pinsel entertained us with a “Mind Benders” quiz.

 

Today’s program was Dan Harris telling us about “Sleep in Heavenly Peace” which is an organization that builds beds for needy children. The organization was started in Idaho in 2012. 2% of all children in the US don’t have a bed to sleep on.  That first year 11 beds were built. This year’s goal is to provide over 4000 beds. There are 150 community chapters in 40 states in the US.

 

Dan Harris is Facilities manager for St Joseph’s Parish. The St Joseph Chapter started in September. Last Saturday 20 beds were built. There is a need in every community. Locally they started with schools and social workers to find kids who needed beds and to build awareness.  They plan a yearly service project in Appalachia. The Chicago Chapter has received 2000 bed requests this year.

 

The beds are designed to be stackable and cost about $350 each. Locally Lowe’s has

provided lumber and Ace Hardware tools. Each bed comes with a mattress in a box and bedding. St Joseph’s provides a budget of $ 10,000.00 and space to build the beds. The local group has contacted police and fire departments and the Region Schools office.  There are 2 major benefits. First, kids in need have a bed to sleep on and second, the Community comes together for a common good and goal.
