PROGRAM:
Today's program was Lake County United presented by Art Noparsnik and former Sunrise Rotary member Dr. Chuck Nozika. LCU is an organization of churches, synagogues and mosques that try to provide affordable housing in Lake County. They organize people to act on their needs. There is a huge need for affordable housing. Businesses need housing for their employees but many can't afford to live in Lake County. There is an attitude of” Not in My Back Yard” towards affordable housing in places like Libertyville. Studies show that affordable housing actually raises property values. For every dollar spent there is a $1.27 economic impact on the community.
LCU is not building “Cabrini Green” housing. Their housing is sustainable and obtainable. One of their projects is Fair Haven Crossing in Mundelein which generates $3-400,000 in taxes and fees yearly. People can start in affordable housing, save up and buy their own home. They also provide subsidized mortgages. Their Grayslake project is 75% affordable housing and 25% for disabled. The move of Winchester House to Mundelein took 15 years. LCU would like to build affordable housing on part of the Winchester House site in Libertyville. They need community help and support. The key with each project is good management.
