-Scott Hezner mentioned Tom Zengeler is a perfect candidate for certain roles, and the club should consider him to fill the job as VP. However, Tucker Olson offered that Greg Hill has already signed-on to do this challenging job. Thank you Greg. Tom, we’ll keep your name on file.
Fun and Frolics:
Ron Lapins enthralled the members with a challenging game of “Doody Head”. Two teams from each table were selected to . . . well since everyone knows this game, I won’t explain it. Our team won! It was all skill.
Program:
Dr. Ryan Winston, Chiropractor from Waukegan, who specializes in spine and posture, talked about an emerging epidemic in opioid abuse caused by pain from personal injury. There are 142 fatal doses/day, and deaths are occurring every 6 hours and getting worse. In comparison, in 1900 there were 10 deaths in every 100,000 persons from polio. In 2015 there were 7 deaths in every 100,000 persons from drugs. Today, 8-12 people per day become addicts due to pain, caused by taking prescription drugs or someone else’s prescription. The theory at the time was that this affected those who could pay for the drugs. Poor policies and misbelief in the 1980’s contributed to the problem and now the likelihood of moving up to more severe drugs such as heroin is 3.4 times more likely, especially among the lower wage earners. 5-15% of folks have low back pain and are candidates for addiction.
Treatments include surgery with artificial disks, spacers, and rods. This is great for severe cases, but with mixed outcome. Physical therapy is great for post-surgical rehab and neurological conditions. This is good for short term, but long term depends on compliance. Chiropractic treatment includes disk decompression and spine stretching. Outcome is like physical therapy. Regenerative medicine is the newest treatment where the spine can actually regrow through injection of platelet rich plasma to the spine to regrow ligaments and stem cell therapy to regrow tissue. The next 10 years will likely make great advancements in treatment. Unfortunately insurance doesn’t cover experimental procedures and treatment can be expensive.
