Greg Hill presided at his last regular meeting as club president. Dennis Kratohwil led us in singing “Happy Father’s Day to You,” to the tune of “Harry Birthday.” As a father myself I found that the rendition brought tears to my eyes.
BRAGS:
Tom Miller became a grandfather for the fifth time, when a baby girl with the usual number of fingers and toes was born to his daughter on Monday.
Howard Jaffe is celebrating his birthday and his wedding anniversary.
Carol August has had her real estate license for thirty years. Some of us were surprised to learn that you can acquire that license at the age of nine.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
We will be having a virtual installation banquet at 5:30 p.m. on June 24. The golf that normally precedes the banquet will be live.
Highway cleanup is scheduled for Saturday June 27 at 7:00 a.m. We will meet at the Sunset Foods parking lot at the corner of 137 and Butterfield. You are all invited to come and do something positive for the environment.
Scott Hezner and Jeff Harger recently gave out nineteen tool bags with the Rotary Wheel embedded in the fabric to apprentices of the IBEW.
FUN AND FROLICS
Our assigned Fun and Frolics provider was not available today and we dispensed with that activity.
PROGRAM:
Today our speaker was Kelly Amadei the administrator of the Village of Libertyville,
and she updated us on parks and recreation in Libertyville.
When the closing of most public facilities came in March, the Libertyville Sports Complex, which attracts a million visitors a year, shut down completely. They have not yet set a date to reopen, partly because recreation management is usually planned three months in advance, and it is difficult to coordinate the lead time in this complex an operation with all the remaining unknowns.
Libertyville has 20 parks, which are now open and being widely used by picnickers and walkers. One unanticipated challenge of the current crisis is that in nice weather many people are eating carryout meals from restaurants in the parks and this has required an increased need to collect trash. The playgrounds remain closed, but they will probably reopen in Phase Four.
Libertyville adopted a ten year capital improvement blueprint in 2019 that calls for remodeling one park a year. Last year Adler Park was remodeled and this year Charlie Brown Park will be remodeled.
A number of summer events have been canceled in Libertyville because of the Coronavirus such as summer concerts and Libertyville Days. Summer day camp and the village pools will also not operate this year. The Farmers Market will remain open though, because as a food supplier they are considered an essential business.
NEXT WEEK:
In lieu of our morning meeting we will have our annual installation dinner next Wednesday evening at 5:30. For the first and hopefully the last time the banquet will be virtual.
