BULLETIN – March 19, 2025

President Jon Robb opened the meeting and called on Greeter Scott Hezner, substituting for Jeff Harger, led us in prayer. There were no volunteers to lead us in song.

 

BRAGS: Tom Gore bragged about his recent travels first to Puerto Vallarta followed by a ski trip to Park City.  Sun, surf, and ski - all with no injuries…..a Super Spring Break!

 

-Tom also bragged about the arrival of his granddaughter, who was born last Sunday.  She weighs in at 4 lbs. 6 oz. and was born 2 months early, so she’ll be in the NICU at Northwestern till the end of April.  We’re sure her grandparents are looking forward to her homecoming!

 

-Howard Jaffe reported on last Saturday’s Second City Fundraiser.  While it will take some time to “crunch” the numbers, it is clear that the event was a huge success.  He expects that this could be our second most successful event ever, and he will give an updated report when the final figures become available.  

-Patricia Bleck reminded members of a community service opportunity coming up on April 12^th.  6 or 7 volunteers will be needed to help at Beacon Place on that date. 

-Ron Lapins reported that the 4-Way Testers’ Golf League would be starting soon.  Keep your Mondays open starting April 28^th for the fun & frolics. 

 

-Speaking of fun & frolics, Scott Hezner entertained us with architectural feats sure to entertain and astound.  Titled “Tall and deep”, Scott took us on an architectural tour first of the tallest buildings in the world followed by those that descend deepest into the earth.  Chicago may have been the home of the world’s first skyscraper with the 1885 completion of the Home insurance Building  (how many of you knew that), but today, none of the tallest or deepest “Top Ten” exist in the US.  From dizzying heights to claustrophobic depths, Scott provided an overview of how such massive structures defy earthquakes and other natural disasters; and all for just a $3 donation to the Club.

 

PROGRAM: Today’s Program was given by Alexandra Sussa of the Farmworkers and Landscapers Advocacy Project (F.L.A.P.).  Alexandra is the Bilingual Chief Executive Officer of FLAP and originally came from Colombia, South America. She has dedicated more than 35 years of experience to performing community outreach and education for very low-wage Latine immigrants. Alexandra explained how FLAP operates and now extends to workers throughout the year, with snowplowing and other activities during the winter.  She shared some of the challenges that her organization and Latine workers face in the current political environment.
