Short timer Diana Taylor rang the bell, Jeff Harger helped us give the Pledge, Greeter Tom Miller led us is prayer and Dennis Kratowhil took us through his own unique rendition of “I fought the law”. Not sure of the logic of the selection. Sergeant at Arms Steve Risley attempted a minor coup when he questioned the timeliness of the opening of the meeting. President Diana could have put him in his place but decided to ring the bell. A shameful abuse of power!

 

-We had one guest: Brad Gutzler, guest of the absent Larry Neal.

 

-Tony Collins bragged about two sons: middle son is a sophomore at St. Norbert’s and is on the Dean’s List. His oldest just graduated from college.

 

-Bob Zamor attended a fire fighter’s meeting in Springfield and 3 Libertyville fire fighters received awards.

 

-Pat Hart just returned from a 12 day cruise from Paris to Prague.

 

-Diana Taylor attended the LHS awards night and presented 2 Rotary scholarships and 5 vocational scholarships.

 

-Doug Fendon is ordering Rotary golf shirts. He needs a minimum of 12 to order. See Doug.

 

-Rick Mittelman is organizing a fifth Wednesday fun & frolics event on a FRIDAY NIGHT. It will be Friday May 31^st at Arlington Race Track. Details to follow.

 

-Steve Risley told us that the beer selection for the August fundraiser has improved. He needs coffee can for drink tickets.

 

-Greg Hill said that event and raffle tickets will be available the first week of June.

 

-The Installation Dinner is June 26^th. There will be no morning meeting.

 

-We have received several thank you notes from recipients of checks at the charitable dinner.

 

-Sam Rinella has resigned from the Club but will help out with the Wine and Beer Fest.

 

Tony Collins entertained us with lottery scratch off tickets.

 

Today’s program was the presentation of checks to the 2 featured charities during the paddle raise at the winter fundraiser benefiting homelessness. Pads and the Haven each received $7,950.00.

 

Julie Daugs from the Lake County Haven spoke first. She has been a board member for 15 years. The group seeks to find permanent independence for women and children. Program participants are tutored in several areas including resumes and job search. 82% find independence from abuse and the Program is 100% full. Stage 1 lasts 2 to 3 months in the shelter and involves training and job search. Stage 2 participants have found a job and may spend up to 2 years in the shelter.

 

Stephen Love told us about Pads. Pads is a homeless shelter that attempts to intervene at an earlier time in the homelessness cycle. The Program can last up to 3 years. Pads works with landlords to keep families in their homes. He thanked the Club for its generosity.
