Libertyville Sunrise Rotary Bulletin September 6, 2023

Rich Babjak led the meeting this week, and opened with a prayer, a pledge, and in honor of Labor Day we all sang Sixteen Tons.

 

Tom Miller took a long drive up past the Saint Lawrence Seaway in Canada and down through Maine and Washington D.C.  He says it was a great trip, and he loved the lobster in New England.

 

 

Scott Hezner bragged about our speaker, Don Dell, who Scott believes is doing something new and exciting at Fremenot Middle School, which we would all get to hear more about during  his talk.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

On this Saturday September 9 our club will be performing a service project for Affordable Housing.  Contact Patricia Bleck for additional details.

 

This Sunday Misericordia will be holding a fun fest on their campus from 11 to 6.  Contact Rich Babjak if you need a ticket.

 

David Ritland has resigned from the club due to a new job he has accepted in Wisconsin, which will make him unable to regularly attend out meetings.  He will be missed.

 

Though it is hard to tell by looking at them that they are getting older, both Doug Fendon and Patricia Bleck are celebrating birthdays this week.

 

Howard Jaffe presided over Fun & Frolics this week, and he played a list of movie and television theme songs, which he challenged his fellow club members to identify them.  Unfortunately, while all the tunes sounded familiar, I did a very poor job of naming them. 

 

Our speaker today was Don Dell, a teacher at Fremont Middle School in Mundelein, who spoke to us about -Career and Technology Ed. 

 

Don spent a number of years constructing houses, before he made a career switch to education and his diverse background has stimulated his interest in exposing younger students to the vast range of career opportunities that lie ahead of them.  With this in mind he had establish a program at Fremont, in which eighth graders meet after classes to learn more about these possibilities. 

 

Don classifies all careers as falling into sixteen clusters, and he attempts to bring in speakers that can supply the students with additional information on vocational choices in all sixteen of the clusters.  One of his speakers was our own Scott Hezner, who as we all would have expected, managed to wow the students with his seemingly unlimited knowledge of architecture.   

 

This week we again passed the hat and collected $321.00 for the Libertyville Township Food Pantry.

 

We had $29.00 in our weekly raffle and $441.00 in the progressive pot with only 39 cards left. 

 

The first card pulled belonged to Ron Lapin and being the conservative fellow he is, he chose to take the sure money.  Bill Rickert then went for the big bucks, showing what an adventurous guy he can be, or perhaps only because having come in second, he had no choice.  In any event it did not work, and we all shed a couple of tears for Bill.
