BULLETIN – June 3, 2026

President Gore rang the bell, Carol August gave the Pledge, Greeter Tom Zengler led us in prayer, and Dennis Kratohwil played a recording of Jim Radford singing “The Shores of Normandy” in honor of the anniversary of D Day.

 

-Steve Risley viewed the movie Pressure about General Eisenhower’s decision to commence the D Day invasion.

-Elliot Pinsel recounted his Presidential year 2021. We were in the middle of Covid and there were 6 members at the meeting. Our membership was declining and he praised Doug Fendon as Membership Chair, for bringing back our membership with his recruiting efforts.

-Kim Smith told us that the LHS boys volleyball team won their sectional match and will go to State if they win on Friday. 

-Tucker Olson told us about past member Ralph Ladke who was stationed on a hospital ship in Pearl Harbor on December 7^th, 1941. Dennis Kratohwil remembered that Ralph drove a Toyota!

-Scott Hezner recounted the Club program to provide tool bags to new apprentices of the IBEW. We gave out 35 bags this year. There were 500 applicants for the 35 positions. This is the 7^th year of the program, and we have given 181 bags so far which is 27% of the IBEW membership!

-Ellen Young is going to England for 6 weeks to visit relatives. Some of her relatives sent their children to Canada for the duration of WW II.

-Tom Zengler’s son graduated from Villanova and has a job!

Rotary Anniversaries: Charles Lesser – 2 years, Jim Curtis – 4 years, Mary Cole – 4 years, Patricia Bleck – 8 years, John Blair – 12 years, Scott Hezner – 35 years, Dave Potts – 27 years.  

 

-We collected $340 for the Food Pantry

 

-Summer Volunteering Events:

     -Main Street Lunch in the Park – June 12 and June 26.

     -Libertyville Days Parade is June 20^th. Rich Schoeneman is asking for Club participation. 

      Please bring family and friends to maximize our presence in the community. Let Rich   

      know if you will attend.

-Jim Curtis is downsizing and leaving the Club at the end of June.

-The Installation Dinner will be held on July 22^nd at Tom Zengler’s house. Details to follow.

-Bob Zamor presented the slate of officers and board members for the upcoming Rotary year. He asked that the membership approve the slate and it was approved unanimously.

 

-Tucker Olson conducted a quiz on the Rotary Foundation.

 

Today’s program was Club member Bill Rickert talking about the Service Above Self Award. This award recognizes the unsung heroes in our community. The award enhances our community awareness and develops interest and notoriety in our Club. Criteria for award recipients include 1. Cannot be a Rotarian, 2. Must exemplify service above self, 3. Must be nominated by a Rotarian, 4. Must demonstrate activities to help others, 5. They must expect no reward, 6. Must have seen a need and done something about it, 7. Must foster a warm caring environment, 8. Emphasize time spent, 9. Have overcome adversity in providing the service.

The award was established in 1997 and has been awarded 15 times including 3 couples. Bill cited all the recipients to give us an idea of how to qualify a recipient. The award winners ranged from those who help people with special needs to those who help seniors. Those who aid vets to those who help battered women. Those who provide Christmas gifts to those who provide food and clothing to the needy. 

Bill called on the Club to identify and recommend possible recipients. Our last award was in 2023. Each recipient receives a clock and a donation to their organization. They also receive a Paul Harris Fellow. Their name will appear on a plaque in the Community Center and will be the topic of a press release. Please give thought to possible recipients and give their name(s) to Bill.

 

-Daily: $50 won by Howard Jaffe.

-Progressive: $1,326 (15 cards). Tom Miller drew the 5 of hearts. ROLLOVER!
