BULLETIN – April 2, 2025

President Jon Robb opened the meeting and called on Patricia Bleck to give the Pledge. Greeter Tom Gore led us in prayer. There were no volunteers to lead us in song ;(
BRAGS:
-Jim Curtis bragged that our own Howard Jaffe was approached by the “Roving Mic” at the White Sox Opening Day Game and, even with the short time he had, he was able to plug Rotary
-Dave Potts bragged about the 55th anniversary of his Dental Practice.
-Elliot Pinsel bragged that it has been 5 years since the pandemic forced him into the servitude of Jeff Bezoz and the survival of only the fittest Amazonians. Elliot displayed his photo I.D. as proof of his ordeal.
Jeff Harger bragged that 48 years ago, after working all night, he overslept and nearly missed his wedding rehearsal dinner. Our bet is that he arrived early for his wedding the following day.
-Tom Zengeler bragged about his experience “herding” 77 other professionals around Japan for 3 weeks. Hi fiancé and family were able to join him so he could enjoy some well-earned down time.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
-John McDonald is looking for 8-12 volunteers for Highway Clean-Up this Saturday at 8 am. Rain date, if needed, will be April 19th.
-Patricia Bleck announced that there are still a few openings to volunteer to tutor at the Beacon Place on Saturday, April 12th. Registration on-line is required.
-President Robb said we would be leading the Libertyville Days Parade and we need 10 volunteers for the June 14th event.
-President Robb also said we will be having a fellowship gathering on the 5th Wednesday of April. The plan is to gather at the new Nirvana Kitchen and Wine Bar on the evening of April 30th.
-Robb also announced that Tom Zengeler, Bill Rickert, and Larry Neal were celebrating 38 years with our Club. Congratulations to our active Charter Members!
-Wedding anniversaries are coming this week to John McDonald (57 years), Jeff Harger (38 years) and Happie Datt (13 years).
Marco Amidei was welcomed back to the Club today. Few remember that he originally joined us in 1999 (including him). Welcome back, Marco!
FUN & FROLICS:
-Ron Lapins turned back the clock to 1965, and ,with the help of an original program, Ron quizzed us on prices at the old Comiskey Park. Few could guess that hot dogs cost 30 cents, a beer cost 40 cents, cigarettes 35 cents and 10 cents for a cigar. We can only imagine what Fun & Frolics would have cost back then, but today we ponied up $3.
On a closing note, Ron shared that Major League Baseball attendees consumed 20 million hot dogs last year while COSTCO shoppers consumed 200 million!
PROGRAM:
Today’s program was given by Sharlett James and Maha Worden of Beacon Place. Sharlett is the Volunteer Coordinator and is a Waukegan native and graduate of Waukegan High School. She joined Beacon Place in 2023 with extensive experience in volunteer coordination, community outreach and youth engagement. Maha is the new executive director of Beacom Place and joined the organization in 2024.
In 2012, a group of friends and volunteers at Holy Family Food Pantry in Waukegan saw that the needs of the families went beyond food insecurity to include academic tutoring, sparking the idea of Beacon Place.
They are here to change the trajectory of their community. They believe that success is not only possible but imperative for the children and families in their neighborhood. They don’t just want children to dare to dream of being more; they expect it.
Tutoring for K-8th grade occur on M-W-Sa and Grades 9-12 on Thursday evening. Volunteers are given a detailed lesson plan prior to their arrival. During the school year, Beacon Place serves over 100 students and their Summer program serves over 150 students. This is all done without financial cost to the families served, but parental participation is expected.
April 12th has been scheduled for our Club to volunteer at Beacon Place to learn about and to assist their mission. Contact Patricia Bleck for details.
RAFFLE:
-Daily: $25 was won by Bill Rickert who donated the proceed to the Food Pantry.
-Progressive: $582 (32 cards remaining). Sheb (in abstentia) drew the 8 of Diamonds. ROLLOVER!
With Bill Rickert’s donation and what we collected on this first Wednesday of the month, $251 was forwarded to the Libertyville Township Food Pantry.
