BULLETIN – September 11, 2024

Jon Robb rang the bell, Bob Zamor started us on the Pledge, Greeter Bill Taranowski led us in prayer and we sang America in honor of September 11^th.

 

Free Spirits received their donation and Art Impact thanked us for theirs.

 

-Howard Jaffe, NIU alum, bragged about NIU’s victory over Notre Dame. He met his wife on the first day at NIU. The White Sox are 80 games under .500!

-Scott Hezner bragged about Iowa State beating Iowa. Scott also met his wife Jane on his first day at Iowa State.

 

-Bill Rickert is looking for Service Above Self award candidates. We presented the first award in 1997. The application is on our website. Candidates cannot be Rotarians.

-We are working the beer tent at the USO benefit at Mickey Finn’s. It will take place on September 19^th from 5 to 11. We have an opening for a volunteer on the second shift.

-Our October 2 meeting will be at City of Hope in Zion. We will start the meeting at 8 and go to 8:45. Our expected speaker will be a doctor doing cancer research. We can stay for a tour after the meeting.

-7:46 am is the anniversary of the first plane hitting the World Trade Center. Never forget!

-We recognized major donors to the Rotary Foundation: Tom Miller, Bob Zamor, Rick Mittelman, Steve Risley, Glenn Garlick, and Jeff Harger.

 

Dave Potts entertained us with animal facts. Most noteworthy was the fact that you can tell a female bear from a male because she pees from the backside!

 

My apologies in advance for the program segment. Our speaker was Jennifer Clark, a Lake County Board member and she spoke so fast that I may have missed some of her points! She is Chair of the Public Works and Transportation Committee. She also is on the Internet Broadband and Finance Committees. She stated that 6000 homes in Lake County do not have broadband service. Young people get scammed the most and need internet training. Surprising! The County will spend $6 million on expanding broadband. The money will come from the American Rescue Plan (ARPA).

Some of her focus has been on expanding bike trails. She said the decisions made today affect generations to come. The Board is working on a grant for bike trails and connections. The county will improve the intersection of Winchester Road and Rt. 83. She also told us about the new Regional Operations Center. The County used $50 mil of ARPA funds to construct this emergency services headquarters on the Libertyville campus. The county hopes to consolidate 911 calls in the new center.

The forest preserves have seen increased usage since Covid. They are preparing a referendum for November. The last one was in 2009, and they have no money left. The board wishes to connect areas for continuity. Their website lists their upcoming projects. They have applied for an operations levy from Springfield that will help pay for work on the new acquisitions. She is high on e bikes. They can travel all over the county on the trail network.
