President Tom Zengeler opened the meeting, Jeff Harger gave the pledge, Patricia Bleck led us in prayer and Songmeister Dennis Kratohwil helped us through “Summertime”. Lyrics knowledge was suspect!

 

 

-Ron  Lapins witnessed his grandson's baseball team sweep their tournament.

-Tucker Olson was happy to be back in person.

-Patricia Bleck's son graduated from college.

 

 

-Bill Rickert told us he had 3 candidates for the Service Above Self Award. The winners were Hasu and Sue Ghandi. They run a food pantry from their garage in Vernon Hills that feeds 200 families per week! The award will be given in June.

-Doug Fendon is sending out an email re: the Installation Dinner. Golf is 6/23 and the Dinner is 6/31 at Tom Zengler's house.

-The Blue Star Recycling event served 123 people and 5520 lbs were recycled!

 

 

-John McDonald was not prepared so he spun the wheel. Ironically he had to sing “Old McDonald had a Farm”!

 

 

Today's program was our own Steve Risley and Bob Zamor talking about the Rotary Foundation's international grants. The Foundation has $1.3 billion in investments with a 5 year average return of $352 million. Earnings that are more than 3 years old are used for grants. The Foundation has a 4 star rating from Charity Navigator ( their highest) and distributes 92% of earnings to grants.

 

The club has given $400k to the Foundation since it's formation. 22 Sunrise members are Paul Harris Fellows having contributed $1,000 to the Foundation. 10 members are major donors. A major donor is someone who has given $8k to the Foundation. The Club matches member contributions to attain Paul Harris status. The Paul Harris Society includes Rotarians who give $1,000 per year.

 

Bob Zamor told us that prior to 2013 $100 of Club contributions went equally to Global grants and DDF (District Directed Funds). Half globally and half locally. $1,000 could become $3,500 in a global grant. Locally $1,000 became $2,000 with a District match. In 2013 the Foundation was swamped with grant requests. The minimum grant was raised to $30k. In 2015 the formula was changed to 50% global, 45% local and 5% for operating expenses. This year the formula is 47.5% DDF, 47.5% Global and 5% for expenses and the International match is down to 80% from 100%.

 

The club's contribution has decreased from $17k in 2016 to $5k in 2020 and $2,765 so far this year. The question is: what can we give? Contributions to the Foundation by 6/30 count for the current year. Contact Steve Risley if you make an contribution so the Club  gets credit.
