Call to Order:  Tucker Olson called the meeting to order for his final time as President.   Steve Risley led The Pledge of Allegiance, Larry Neal did the prayer, and Dan Lutter led in singing “In the Good Ol Summer Time.”

 

Guests:  Donna Linder of the Illinois Beach Sunrise Rotary.  Also Guest Speakers Elyse Dankers, Maria Gonzalez, and Marlenny Gonzalez of Waukegan to College (W2C)

 

-Tucker reminded everyone of the Libertyville Sunrise Rotary’s Installation Dinner at White Deer Run Golf Course clubhouse on June 27^th.   Golfers will start at 11:30, cash bar at 5:30, open buffet dinner at 6:15.  There is no regular morning meeting.

 

-Jon Robb mentioned Wine, Beer & Cigar Fest posters are available at the sign-in table for placement in businesses around the community.

 

-Steve Risley mentioned there is still time to donate to the Rotary Foundation Paul Harris charity giving.  It gives the club long term benefits, not just one year.

 

-Incoming President-Elect Diana Taylor mentioned several things:  No meeting next week due to the Installation Dinner; No meeting on July 4th due to the Fourth of July Holiday and Lambs Farm is closed; and the next board meeting is July 10^th, and next regular meeting is July 11^th.

 

-Larry Neal said his charity golf outing was a huge success with great golf and food.  Golfers were Tom Miller, Bob Rickert, Larry Neal, and Greg Hill.  The team shot 40 and had a lot of fun with gimmicky games along the way.  The outing generated $40K plus.

 

-Greg Hill acknowledged 27 years of marital bliss.

 

-Steve Risley put some brochures from the Charitable Giving Dinner on the sign-in table for those who want a copy.

 

-Jon Robb thanked Tom Miller for doing such a good job on the club Web site.  It looks great.

 

Rich Babjak gave the members at their tables a quiz on stocks, estates and other financial things.  

 

The club welcomed Elyse Dankers, Maria Gonzalez and Marlenny Gonzalez from Waukegan to College (W2C).  This program assists students and parents from Waukegan to progress to a college education thus furthering their success in life.  As of the year ending this June, W2C won an Excellence in Education award and another for Latinos success in secondary education.  The program has 53 high honor students and 23 honor roll students.  Part of the education includes taking students on trips to businesses like Abbott and Abbvie, and they even took a trip to Ohio. 

 

Maria Gonzalez is a board member of W2C and adult student.  Although mostly for youth, the program includes helping parents as well, and by getting them to college improves the success for their own students to succeed.   

 

Marlenny Gonzalez is a youth student and gets tutoring every Saturday.  She has participated in summer camp which she never expected to happen due to cost.  Kids in the program start at an early age as 5^th graders, and the intent is when they get to the middle and high school learning will be easier.  She is currently Vice-President of the Youth Council and her trip to Firmi Lab provided  her with opportunities for career options.  She also works at a Thrift Store giving her experience in retail work.  Not only is this a good experience, but it provides great references and connections for future work.

W2C provides daily or weekend tutoring and they are always looking for volunteers to assist the students.  One fit might be to assist with college applications the first week of August.  There is an Alumni Board which also helps guide the program which has been in existence 10 years.  They operate with a $500K budget and have a staff of 5 plus numerous volunteers.  It is only open to Waukegan students at this time as the budget isn’t sufficient to allow for other communities to participate.   They have good relationships with Waukegan High School superintendent and numerous colleges.  Although all colleges are considered, students seem to do better in the smaller colleges. 

 

Special thanks to Tucker Olson for the great year as Libertyville Sunrise Rotary President.  He received a standing ovation.
