BULLETIN – September 3, 2025

President Tom Gore rang the big, beautiful bell and called on Tucker Olson to give the Pledge. Greeter Michael Schachner led us in prayer, And Song Meister Kratohwil, in a surprisingly short intro honoring the hardest working Club in the district, took us through “Taking care of business”.

 

-New member Dave Westlake’s oldest daughter in Wisconsin is expecting the first grandchild in October, and his son in California is getting married in October. A busy month. His other daughter is playing on the Global Hockey Team in Pittsburgh.

-Dennis Kratohwil told us about the power of 3’s in the golf league.

-Tom Miller recently celebrated 46 years of marriage and wife Cheryl forgot the date!

-Steve Nelson’s daughter works for Charles Scwab and was recently promoted.

-Michael Schachner won the Ivanhoe Club championship.

-Howard Jaffe told us about the following events we are sponsoring. Sunday is the Willow House Walk/run at Independence Grove, Misericordia Family Fest this weekend, presentation to the Village Board of the new gazebo in Sunrise Rotary Park, USO beer tent on 9/16, Libertyville Oktoberfest 9/19 – 9/20, and the City of Hope Walk 10/4.

 

Diana Servos asked us for our best college football memories. 

 

Today’s program was LHS baseball coach Matt Thompson. The LHS baseball team won the IHSA 4A state championship. Matt studied world history at Northwestern and moved to Libertyville in 1981 and realized it was a baseball town. He began coaching in 2002 and became the LHS head coach in 2017. They have a fundraising tournament called the Fields of Green on 9/13. 

JV coaches are called JV dogs and have a connection with the players. They contribute to their development. Matt took the team to Arizona to do spring training. The team played against 16 of the best teams, beating 4 teams to win the tournament. They met with Brett Butler, the only LHS to make the big leagues. Each year the team awards a Brett Butler award to the best teammate. All players are motivated to be good teammates. Matt consolidated Little League and Muni league together to develop players. The LHS players are encouraged to go to youth games. 

Their goals this year were to win 30 games, Win the Sectional and Super Sectional, and the State Semis and the State Championship. The team has super stars, but they need all 28 to be team players. LHS has a sophomore pitcher with a 95-mph fast ball. He went 13 – 1 in conference play. The team reached the Sectionals for the first time since 2013. Once they went downstate, they relaxed and were able to win the State title. On July 3^rd, they went to a Cubs game and went out on the field to be honored for the championship. Matt has 5 offensive players and 2 pitchers returning next year. Repeat?0

District Designated Funds are generated based on the contributions to the Annual Fund. Every year, each district’s contributions to the Annual Fund – Share are divided up. First,5% is deducted for operational costs. The rest is split equally, 47.5% each, between the World Fund and funding for the district.

 

-We collected $375 for the Food Pantry.
