BULLETIN – October 16, 2024

President Robb rang the bell, Bill Rickert led us in the Pledge and prayer, Dennis Kratohwil helped us sing America the Beautiful in honor of a recent visit to Pike’s Peak.

 

-Carol August’s niece ran in the Chicago Marathon and raised $12k for Pancreatic Cancer Research.

-Dennis Kratohwil’s son got married in Denver having a destination wedding.

-Doug Fendon and his wife spent 2 nights at the Abbey Resort on a package that was a silent auction item at the last Fundraiser. They took a boat ride on Lake Geneva and visited the Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. Doug reminded us that it is not too early to gather items for the next event. 

-Charles Lesser recently visited the family farm in Minnesota and saw the Northern Lights. The planning firm he owns with his father was named one of the top wealth management firms by Forbes magazine.

-Tom Miller related a story that his uncle was killed in WW II and that another uncle talked with his uncle’s fellow soldiers who gave an account of his death. His living uncle, who never speaks of his time in the war, recounted the story for 2 hours.

-Tom Gore was in Hilton Head for 2 ½ weeks when hurricane Helene struck. They fled to Macon, GA and had 2 flat tires on the way. He also attended the Bear’s game in London.

 

-Happie Datt has a friend who moved to Asheville, NC. After the hurricane hit, it took 4 days for him to escape. The Rotary Club of Pinehurst is raising money for the Rotary Disaster Fund.

-GiveNKind sent a thank you for our contribution and our community service project.

-Elliot Pinsel has conducted his gift drive with ornaments for 31 years. He will bring ornaments next week.

-Our annual Christmas party will be the evening of 12/4 at Timothy O’Toole’s. There will be no morning meeting.

-October 30^th will be the fifth Wednesday of the month. The meeting that day will be in the evening at Charlie’s Run at White Deer Run.

 

Bill Tarnowski conducted a blackjack game at each table.

 

Today’s program was a discussion of a Rotary Global Grant we are pursuing. The Club’s contribution is $ 3,500 which will be matched by local Rotary Clubs in Mexico and the Rotary Foundation. The grant will fund a project of Sharing Smiles. The group started in 2000 and offers life-changing cleft and upper palate surgeries to children. The group is a program of Advent Health in Orlando, Florida. 

Sharing Smiles will send a team into the poorest areas of Mexico. They work with the local, nationally run hospitals to provide surgeries and offer training to local doctors and staff. Our Rotary Clubs will work with local clubs to manage the waiting area. Rotary also provides water and necessary supplies that go in with no customs fees. Rotary brings healers to work together. Sharing smiles works in Mexico, Bolivia and Peru.

 

Tucker Olson provided 3 bottles of wine to be auctioned. Glenn Garlick was the lucky bidder.

 

-Daily: $27 won by Dennis Kratohwil who donated his winnings to the Food Pantry.

-Progressive: $98 (51 cards). Tucker Olson drew the 5 of spades. ROLLOVER!

Bill Taranowski had a previous wheel and was supposed to organize the next highway cleanup. He forgot to do it. $20.
