President Diana Taylor opened the meeting, yours truly led us in the Pledge, and Doug Fendon gave the prayer. A song was promised for the end of the meeting but alas it was forgotten.

 

BRAGS:
-Robin O’Connor bragged about her winning of the election for County Clerk.

-Bill Taranowski won a dinner at Seb Karasu’s house at the winter fundraiser. He said it was marvelous and recommended that everyone should bid on it next year if offered.

 

-Ron Lapins returned from his annual trip to Marco Island. He and wife Pam celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary and no one ended up in the hospital this year!

 

-Seb Karasu is becoming a Citizen on Monday morning in Chicago.

 

-Visiting former Sunrise Rotarian Bruce Rodman took the Warm Coats idea back to his club in Durango Colorado and they distributed 50 coats last year. They hope to triple the number this year.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
-The holiday party is 12/5 at Post time in Libertyville. So far we only have 10 people. The party starts at 6:30pm with food and a cash bar. We also need a person to conduct games. Marshmallows will not be tolerated!

 

-Elliott will have his truck available the morning of 12/12 to collect ornaments.

 

-Saturday 12/8 is our annual Salvation Army bell ringing event. Be there or be fined! The scheduled has been emailed.

 

-Save the date. The winter fundraiser is 3/1/2019. The first committee meeting is 11/29 at 5:30pm at Diana Taylor’s office.

 

PROGRAM:
Today we honored Ken Chapin for his many years of Club membership and service. Ken was joined by his family and was given an honorary membership in the Club. Ken reminisced about his years in the Club. When he was President he heard from a doctor in Uganda who needed medical equipment. He convinced Hollister to donate the equipment. His latest project is a baby box at the Libertyville Fire Station on the east side. He hopes to raise $20k to fund the project.

 

FUN & FROLICS:
Tom Miller did fun & frolics as a tribute to Ken Chapin. Ken joined the Club in June of 1994. Jeff Harger was his sponsor. Ken served as Club President and continues to contribute. Tom Miller told a story about how Ken saved him money when he was building his new building in Mundelein. The village was going to charge to allow Tom to cut down trees. There were several on the property but Ken convinced the village that there were only 3 trees. Tom still works with Ken today.

Ron Lapins said that Ken made him feel welcome and had interesting stories. Scott Hezner said that Ken simplifies everything. Peggy Freese said that Ken was a good friend and very generous. Larry Neal once worked part time for Ken. He was always ready to install fencing for our events. Seb Karasu said Ken told her to keep smiling. Ken saved a tree for John McDonald. Dave Ritland remembered Ken venting to Congress.

 

Dave Potts said Ken embodied the moto “Service above Self”. Bill Taranowski enjoyed a week at Ken’s home in Door County, donated at a fundraiser. Dennis Kratowhil recalled that Ken served as President for 17 months, taking over for a Rotarian who had family issues. His truck was used several times in the Libertyville Days parade and Ken provided poinsettias at Christmas time. Doug Fendon recalled Ken’s sense of humor when he visited Ken in the hospital and realized that Diane, Ken’s wife, was one of Doug’s teachers in school. Tom Zengler recognized Ken’s contributions to Special Olympics.

 

There were many more accolades. The Club has been lucky to have a member with Ken’s dedication, generosity and commitment to service.
