President Jon Robb opened the meeting and called on Elliot Pinsel to lead us in the Pledge and Howard Jaffe offered the prayer. There were still no volunteers to lead us in song.
BRAGS: Howard reminded us of his commitment to the White Sox over the years…..through thick & thin, wins and losses. Tomorrow he will be attending his 60th Opening Day !!!!!!!
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
- President Robb announced that there would be a brief Board meeting following today’s Club meeting.
-Bob Zamor reported sending out a couple of emails the last two days: one was the Bulletin and the other an update on assignments. If members did not receive these, he asked them to first check their junk mail and then contact him so he could work on a remedy.
-Prez Robb announced that April has a 5th Wednesday, and we are planning an evening fellowship on that date at Nirvana’s new location.
FUN & FROLICS:
- Howard Jaffe played recording of 15 guitar intros and challenged members to identify them. Only one member got them all correct, Superstar ( and today’s Sgt. of Arms) Elliot Pinsel! Howard paid Elliot’s F&F fee; the rest of us were not so lucky.
AWARDS & RECOGNITIONS: Jim Curtis received his Paul Harris plus 5 pin, while Rich Babjak received his certificate for being a Major Donor, and Jeff Harger received his certificate for being a Major Donor – Level 4.
PROGRAM: Today’s Program was given by Moha Nouacha who is working on a Global Grant project to support a Women's Cooperative in a small village in Morocco. Moha has been in Rotary (Winnetka-Northfield Rotary Club) for 12 years and is retired from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University where he managed their Executive Education Center for 30 years. His area of expertise is international management and marketing. The topic of the presentation will be creating a revenue and employment generating women's clothing cooperative in the Moroccan Village of Timoulilt through a $100,000.00 global grant with The Rotary Foundation.
Moha reminded members that Morocco was the first country to officially recognize the United States in 1776 and hosted our first consulate in Tangiers. The host Rotary Club for this project is the Rabat RC, the oldest in Morocco.
The Women’s Training Center was established in 2002 and trains women to use sewing, knitting, and other provided equipment to create clothing products to generate income. In the last 20 years, the one-year training program has “graduated” roughly 436 women with 40 finding work with outside employers and 15 who started their own businesses. In 2018, they were awarded a Global Grant to repair and remodel their building and add a playground that has become a model for the area. Today, only 2 sewing machines are still working and the proposed Global grant is to buy new machines, expand their product capabilities, and teach entrepreneurial and management skills.
Moha hopes to launch the project in October of this year and have a fellowship exchange in April 2026. Contributions toward this worthy project can be made at wnrotary.com
