Lame duck President Elliot Pinsel started us off with the bell, Diana Servos did the Pledge, Greeter Ron Lapins led us in prayer and Dennis Kratohwil helped us through “The caissons go rolling along” in honor of the Army’s 248^th birthday.

 

-Ron Lapins had 2 brags. His 8-year-old grandson is playing great baseball and he nearly killed Howard Jaffe and Rick Mittelman when he shanked a tee shot on Monday in the golf league.

 

-Diana Servos and spouse are expecting a baby girl on 9/14. Shall we order cigars?

Yours truly conducted a putting contest for Fun & Frolics. Due to the Augusta-like floor conditions at Lambs, no one could make the ball stay in the target cup!

 

Today’s program was Katie Hanlon, Executive Director of Project Cure. Katie has a degree in non-profit finance and spent 20 years with Rush Medical in the Major Gifts area. She is also a recent member of Rotary 1.

 

Project Cure was founded in 1937 in Colorado and is the world’s largest distributor of donated medical supplies. Project Cure has built and grown their healthcare infrastructure. They have 7 warehouses nationally and some 40,000 volunteers. Last year they shipped 2401 40-foot containers to 138 countries for medical relief. Insurance typically pays for more supplies than are needed, so hospitals donate the unused portion. There are $350k to $400k of supplies in each container. Cure clinics send doctors and nurses to distribute the supplies when they arrive. They have sent 260 kids for kids’ bags containing first aid supplies. In areas of political unrest, Project Cure will send suitcase size containers with $4 – 6k worth of supplies.

How to help? Project Cure has applied for 270 Rotary grants worldwide. Katie suggested we could partner with clubs in the areas served. Their warehouse is in Woodridge and volunteers are always welcome.  Grants can be put together. Does the equipment match the need? Advocate/Aurora is a partner. They have donated anesthesia and ultrasound machines.

 

-Daily: $23. No one claimed the winning ticket so $ went back to the club.
