New President Greg Hill opened the meeting, Dave Ritland led us in the pledge, Scott Hezner gave the prayer and Dennis Kratohwil led us in song in honor of National Tequila Day.

 

-Tucker Olson visited his new granddaughter.

 

-Scott Hezner bragged about how organized new Sergeant at Arms Rich Schoeneman is.

 

-Doug Fendon told us about the 150^th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad. Union Pacific is taking the “Big Boy”, the largest steam locomotive ever built, across the U.S. It will pass through North Chicago on Friday between 10 and 1 on the track next to Rt. 41.

 

-Greg Hill urged us to sell more tickets for the fundraiser. We are close to last year’s sales. There is one more meeting on 8/14 at Pet Factory.

 

-The District Governor is visiting on 8/7 and will be at the August Board meeting on 8/6.

 

-A revised calendar for August is out and will be emailed.

 

-Don’t forget to sign up for Highway Cleanup on 8/10.

 

Pat Hart conducted a paper airplane contest in honor of the 50^th anniversary of man landing on the moon.

 

Today’s program was Marcie Pykelny talking about the American Cancer Society. ACS is an emotional topic for Marcie. Her mom is a 3 time breast cancer survivor. She has been a staff member for 5 years.

 

ACS was formed in 1946 by activists who wanted to increase awareness and impact. They lobby for research dollars to fight the disease. The government is the number 1 funder of cancer research and ACS is number 2. So far $ 4.8bil has been raised with $20 million invested in Illinois programs such as Smoke Free Illinois.

 

ACS is community based. Volunteers drive patients to treatment. They have a lodging program for people travelling to treatment. There is a wigs program. The website: cancer.org is a resource providing patients with direction. ACS only funds accredited research programs. There is a fundraising event every Fall called “Relay for Life”. The website contains details of available trials and provides patient navigators to patients.
