President Tom Gore opened the meeting, Ron Lapins gave the Pledge, Greeter Jon Robb led us in prayer, and in honor of 9/11, song Meister Dennis Kratohwil took us through the song: “Proud to be an American”.
BRAGS:
-Tom Gore bragged that he and Howard Jaffe presented a $20,000 check to the Village Board for the renovation of Sunrise Rotary Park. Tom credited Howard for this effort. They presented a “big check” to the Board, and this will give the club great exposure in the community. They also gave the Board a Paul Harris Fellow to celebrate our relationship.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
-Charles Lesser has accepted the position of New Generations chair.
-Bob Zamor told us that he is having trouble with Club Runner. Emails are not getting to all members. Members are not receiving notices about Club duties such as Greeter & Prayer and Fun & Frolics. Please advise Bob if you have not received Club emails.
CHARITABLE AWARDS:
Today we honored Pads. Pads was formed in 2008 to provide homelessness prevention. They have been working to build a fixed site shelter and now have one. They thanked us for our years of support and will be having a gala on 9/20 at Tight Head Brewery in Mundelein.
FUN FROLICS:
Rich Schoeneman subbed for Gina Shad and gave us a “Name that Rotarian” quiz.
PROGRAM:
Today’s program was Sheriff John Idleburg of the Lake County Sheriff’s Department. The Sheriff’s Department was established in 1839 and is the third largest in Illinois. His department has 3 main responsibilities. First, security for the courts. Second, they are responsible for the jail. Third, civil processing. The jail has a capacity of 740 and there are currently 620 inmates. Inmates are in jail if they are in pretrial status and are a flight risk. Sheriff Idleburg installed a kidney dialysis machine in the jail so that inmates would not need to be transported to another facility.
The Department has a marine unit that patrols the Chain of Lakes and the Lake Michigan shoreline in Lake County. The Chain has 9,000 acres of water with 18,000 registered boats and is the biggest recreational waterway in the country. The Department has a 29 ft boat on Lake Michigan for search and rescue. The lake is the responsibility of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. They do not have the resources to patrol the lake, so they work in conjunction with the Coast Guard and the Sheriff’s Department to cover the lake. The Chain requires patrols to ensure the laws are followed. If divers are needed, they come from local fire departments.
The Sheriff was asked about interacting with ICE. The Department is not allowed by law to work with ICE. He was asked about the Safe Act and cashless bail. The Sheriff is in favor of cashless bail. In his words: “justice is not blind”. Some offenders could not afford the previous bails that were set and remained jailed until trial. The Sheriff has worked to set up crisis outreach. There is a mental health assistance team to help in a crisis. The 911 center has been consolidated in Libertyville.
