President Elliott Pinsel opened our meeting this week with a pledge and a prayer followed by singing of “Moon Shadow” led by Dennis Kratohwil.  The song went so well, it makes you wonder if instead of the Sunrise Club, we should become the Moonshine Club

 

Richard Schoeneman bragged that he played golf Monday night in the rain and shot an excellent score of 36 for nine holes.

 

Elliott Pinsel related to us the story about his volunteer stint at Ravinia in which he had to confront a rather irate patron who challenged Elliott’s instructions not to bring a can onto the grounds.  Apparently she became extremely rude, but Elliott remembered the four way test, and restrained himself from responding in kind, which sounds particularly commendable, since the partron was apparently a little old lady, who it sounds like Elliott could have taken down, if he had given into the temptation to resort to fisticuffs.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Carol August announced that a fundraiser will be held for Tucker Olson’s campaign for the county board, and we are all invited.  The event will be held on Thursday this week at the Sundance from 5:30 to 7:30. Hopefully, she means p.m., since I obviously did not get the bulletin out in time to advise you of an a.m. event.

 

This Saturday morning there will be a run for Colon Cancer at Independence Grove.  If interested please contact Elliott Pinsel.

 

Our club received a notice to save the date of November 3, 2022, when we are all invited to attend a dinner at the Hyatt Regency in Schaumburg, where we can listen to a presentation entitled “Why the Rotary Foundation is Important.”

 

Jon Robb informed us that since August 31 is a fifth Wednesday we will be holding a social gathering that evening in lieu of a morning meeting.’’  We will congregate at Joyful Gourmet from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. where a chef will provide a lesson in preparing appetizers.

 

Dominic Hagmann, our former Swiss exchange student attended our meeting this week, and gave us an update in what he has been doing, since he departed from Libertyville nine years ago. Since Dominic is a Swiss citizen, he was required to serve a mandatory term in the military, and shortly after he returned to his homeland, he spent a year in the Swiss army.  He then attended college to study engineering and his course of studies included building a rocket and an electric race car. After he received his bachelor degree, he became interested in quantum physics, and he is now working on a master degree in quantum engineering.  Dominic also brought his girlfriend Corina to breakfast, whom he met in the course of his studies.

 

John Blair chaired Fun & Frolics this week, which included a quiz supplying us with lots of fascinating information, which we can all store in our brains for future use at a date yet to be determined.  I learned that the three tallest buildings in Chicago are the Willis Tower, the Trump Tower and the St Regis. He also told up about the Newton Gang, who were the perpetrators of the largest train robbery in history. Coincidentally this event occurred just a hop, skip, and a jump down the road from us in beautiful Rondout Illinois. Perhaps if we had been having a meeting that morning, the gang could have dropped by to join us for breakfast

 

 

 

Our speaker this week was our own Howard Jaffe who spoke to us about the Rotary Foundation.  There is a local Rotary Foundation which supports a number of local charities, and which our club contributes to through our weekly raffle, fun and frolics, and our big fundraiser events.  Rotary also has an international foundation which is a world-wide charity, and which sponsors many fine programs around the globe, including scholarship programs, disaster relief, RYLA, and their biggest project of all the effort to end polio world-wide. The polio project has made great progress, but it has still not been able to declare a final victory over the foe.

 

Since our founding the Libertyville Sunrise Rotary has contributed $445,000.00 to the international foundation.  Howard also recognized our club members who have recently received Paul Harris Fellowships for donating to the foundation which include Carol August, Patricia Bleck, Jim Curtis, Doug Fendon, Jon Robb, Elliott Pinsel, Richard Schoeneman, John McDonald, and Richard Mittelman

 

Howard Jaffe had to spin the Howard Jaffe Memorial Wheel this week for committing the grave offense of not wearing his Rotary badge.   Being the shy fellow he is Howard then chose to pay $10.00 rather than whistle “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad.”

 

Our weekly drawing offered a $28.00 prize, while our progressive raffle reached the princely sum of $719.00 with only 34 cards left.  Howard Jaffe who apparently had not gotten enough attention from being speaker and wheel spinner today also won the weekly raffle prize. Mary Cole then went for the big money, which rumor has it she would have donated to the foundation had she won, but she fell short by only pulling the four of spades.
