President Elliot Pinsel opened the meeting and gave the Pledge. Tom Miller led us in prayer and there was no song!

 

-There were no brags.

 

-Bill Rickert received a thank you letter from Service Above Self recipient George Capaul.

-The Club received a thank you letter from last week’s speaker Canilia Gardner.

-Brad Gutzler got an article published about our Club’s charitable work in the Daily Herald.

-Jon Robb is heading a Fall Fundraiser committee. See Jon if interested.

-Doug McConnell, a Libertyville swimmer, is attempting to swim from Nantucket to

Martha’s Vineyard.

-Doug Fendon has received our Club Rotary banners. They are exchanged when you visit another Club.

-The next Board meeting is August 2 at 5:45pm via Zoom. This will be a meeting with our new District Governor Bill Kniecek. He will be speaking to the club on Wednesday. All are welcome.

 

-A case of polio was discovered in New York this month.

 

-Robin O’Connor entertained us with a quiz on County Fair foods. She encouraged us to visit the County Clerk display at the Fair.

 

Today’s program was John Church, a retired officer of Catholic Charities. Catholic Charities is the largest social services organization in Lake County with 2500 employees. They serve everyone. Services include working with organizations like PADS to find homes for the homeless and low-income families. They operate a self-sufficiency program to help single parents get on their feet. They provide emergency services for people without food or shelter. Their food pantry feeds 400 to 500 families. They operate a senior case management system which helps seniors with quality of life, self-determination and individual dignity and worth. They serve over 1000 homes with a Meals on Wheels program.

 

John has worked with Elliot Pinsel on the Christmas Gift Program that the Club supports. The program served over 14,000 people providing over 27,000 gifts through programs like ours last year. They meet in September to do a needs assessment and meet in October and November to match gifts required with donors. Donors bring gifts during the first week of December and the gifts are distributed the following week. Donors include high schools, churches, businesses and groups like our Club. They always need a warehouse to hold the gifts. They are looking for a donor to provide a 65,000 to 100,000 sq ft building this fall.
