Doug Fendon led us in prayer, Tom Zengeler gave a prayer for Ukraine, and we had no song.

 

-Ron Lapins just returned from 3 weeks on Marco Island. He celebrated his wife’s birthday with a very expensive gift, he filled up her gas tank!

 

-Dave Potts also just returned from Florida where he played golf with Pat Schwartz and Ron Lapins.

 

-Scott Hezner bragged about Jeff Harger’s 45^th anniversary.

 

-Doug Fendon just returned from 3 months in Arizona. He got to meet his new grandson and mourned the passing of his dad at 94. He found a ticket his dad had from a baseball game where Bo Belinsky pitched a no hitter.

 

-Patricia Bleck visited her son in Homer Glen. He is expecting their first grandchild.

 

-Bill Taranowski visited Utah recently training for a 2-week hiking trip this Summer with his son.

What is the Rotary Foundation’s funding cycle? The Rotary Foundation has a unique funding cycle that utilizes contributions for programs three years after they are received. The three year cycle gives districts time for program planning and participant selections and allows The Rotary Foundation to invest the contributions.

 

-April Board meeting is 4/19 at 5 pm on Zoom.

 

-The social event last Wednesday saw 30 people attend.

 

-Highway cleanup is 4/23. 7am at Sunset Foods.

 

-Electronic recycling event is 4/30 from 10 am to 1 pm at Sunset Foods.

 

-Our meeting on 4/20 will start early at 7:15 am with speaker Brad Schneider.

-Bill Rickert is looking for nominations for the Service Above Self award. Nominating forms are available.

 

-President Rich Schoeneman presented a check for $22,600 to Doug Meffley of Honor Flight Chicago. Next week they will conduct their 100^th flight to Washington DC. They funds were raised during the paddle raise at our recent fundraiser.

 

Robin O’Connor entertained us with fun facts about Peeps.

 

Today’s program highlighted our own Scott Hezner. Scott grew up in Deerfield and graduated from Deerfield High School. He then went to Iowa and studied architecture earning a degree in 1984. He interned in Iowa city at the firm of Hillary & Mason. While in Iowa he met his wife Jane, and they enjoy gardening, golf and movies. He has now been an architect for 32 years.

 

The Hezner Company was founded by his grandfather 90 years ago. The company started in 1932 as the Chicago Bank Building Company. They focused on buildings for the saving and loan industry. Scott and his brother renamed the company in 1995 and settled in Libertyville where they sought to expand their market. Today they are working on projects worldwide. They focus on military projects in the U.S. and Europe.

 

Scott’s Rotary focus is on vocational training and scholarships. He has been critical of District 6440 because of the narrow definition of vocations. Since 2016 our Club has awarded 21 scholarships to high school students. 6 were sent to the district for shared funding and none were accepted. Scott has worked to change the manual for vocational scholarships to include CTE education and vocational training. Not all students go to college. Scholarships should be for all vocations.
