Newly booted Past President Tom Zengler opened the meeting. Patricia Bleck gave the Pledge. Diana led us in virtual prayer and Dennis Kratohwil  led us in “Welcome back” in honor of Howard Jaffe’s return to full time status.

 

-Howard Jaffe celebrated 46 years with Bev and retirement after 50 years of banking.

 

-Rich Mittelman retired after 38 years as a lawyer.

 

-John McDonald broke 50 in the Sunrise golf league shooting a 49 for the first time! He owes it all to Pat Schwartz’ swing tips. He also finished 9^th in a 5k run in the over 70 category.

 

-Elliott Pinsel spent 12 days driving around Alaska.

 

-Tucker Olson celebrated 40 years in his search career and is still working!

 

-Tom Zengler recognized Jim Connell for his work on the Winter Fundraiser.

 

-Fall Fundraisers will be wine tastings on October 2 and 9, 2021

 

John Blair is recovering and doing well.

 

-Elliott Pinsel entertained us with a quiz asking for names of songs using only the first line as a clue.

 

Today’s program was Libertyville Mayor Donna Johnson with Village Administrator Kelly Amedei. Donna served as a Lake and Cook County prosecutor. She was Chair of the Condell Hospital Board and was legal counsel for 3 Presidents at Allstate. Her specialty there was negotiating contracts. Donna’s father was a chemical engineer who could not find a job because of color. He worked in the Chicago Fire Department and rose to a high rank. She got her work ethic from him.

 

She ran unopposed but is not in the job for the money. She wants Libertyville businesses to thrive. Capitalism is not a bad word. She does not want Libertyville to be known as the community that always says no. She only wants to work with” Blue Chip” developers. She started by meeting with every village employee. She asked everyone what the top 10 things they could do to make their job easier. She stresses efficiency.

 

Her early highlights include collecting a “non-home rule sales tax”. She asked Trustees to adopt a Storm water utility fee. Libertyville has a $53 million storm water problem. Donna did not want to raise property taxes. She also negotiated a lease with Cangan Sports Corp. to operate the Sports Complex with an option to buy. Her capital projects include: new playgrounds, a 15-year storm water improvement plan. She wants to consolidate village efforts and staff. What are neighboring communities doing? She supports the police and wants to attract quality people.
