President Pinsel opened the meeting, Howard Jaffe gave the pledge, Greeter Bill Rickert led us in prayer and song Meister Dennis Kratohwil helped us with a rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner in honor of 9/11 and the Queen’s passing.

 

-Tom Zengler bragged that his youngest son is now in college and his daughter got a job at Cornell University as a researcher.

 

-Dave Potts attended the Christian Leadership outing with Tom Miller.

 

-Tom Miller is celebrating 43 years of wedded bliss and is expecting their 6^th grandchild in February.

 

-Elliot Pinsel’s oldest son is now in law school. Is this the original “Bacon boy”?

Yours truly conducted a chipping contest. No major damage was done to Lamb’s!

 

Today’s program was Dan White from Beacon Place. They provide a safe place for teens in Waukegan. They chose Waukegan because it is a food desert, it has the largest % of people living below the poverty level, and only 20% of high school students are college ready. Dan said: “You can’t learn if you are hungry.” They conduct food and nutrition programs. They also broaden student horizons. They integrate technology with home practice.

 

Beacon Place was founded in 2012 when they purchased a house and renovated it. They built an annex to accommodate their growing program in 2018. Their 5 pillars are: healthy lifestyles, education, enrichment, family and community. Each teen goes home with a backpack with food and books. They emphasize STEM subjects. Their programs are conducted from 3:45 to 5:45 0n Monday and Wednesday and 9 to 1 on Saturday. They also conduct Parent U and a mom’s program for parents. Students go on field trips to get exposure to the outside world.

 

The organization needs more space, financial resources and volunteers. It comes down to impact. “How can we say no? You can help us say yes.” They rely heavily on volunteers.
