Call to Order:  Club President Tom Zengeler called the hybrid In-Person/Zoom meeting to order.  Bob Zamor led the Pledge of Allegiance, Pat Schwartz  gave a prayer, and Dennis Kratowil led in singing “Happy Golf Day” (Happy Birthday tune) to all the golfers now the club golf season is over.

-Lyle Schwabb, District Governor said he will match $25.00 for every $250.00 the club donates to the Rotary Foundation.

 

-Pat Hart enthusiastically announced the upcoming Highway Cleanup at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2020, meeting at Sunset Foods, Libertyville (Peterson Road).  Need volunteers!

 

-Tim Dempsey also announced the annual Pumpkin Fest the same day, October 17, 2020, meeting at 9:00am, Cook Park, downtown Libertyville.  Need volunteers!  Members get two makeup credits if they do both per Bob Zamor.  Please send photos to Patricia Bleck of both events for the club scrapbook.

 

-Tom Zengeler announced the next Board meeting is Tuesday, October 13th via Zoom.

 

Fun and Frolics:  Carol August did a Halloween quiz where Halloween images for movies were imbedded on a scary picture and the winner had to name as many as possible.  I believe the most was 9, but I could be mistaken.    

 

Program:  Heidi Schrage, Development and Events Coordinator for Lake County Haven presented via Zoom.  The Haven is a shelter and place where homeless and financially destitute women can go to receive assistance getting back on their feet.  Since inception, the organization has helped over 1,200 women. 

 

There are 2 phases/stages of assistance to help the ladies attain independence.  Stage 1 is 4-5 months at a shelter and a case manager works to help the women with their basic needs, shelter, food, general  support.  Stage 2 is independent living where they pay rent to the Haven for up to 2 years, use public transportation, work at a job, and provide for their own food. 

 

This has been a difficult year due to COVID-19.  The Haven was set to open a 2^nd shelter in April for 10 women and children but the coronavirus pandemic stopped that.  In the meantime, residents were placed in local hotels, via grant.  Luckily, none of the women caught the virus.  The new shelter is now scheduled to open November 2, 2020.

 

The ladies meet in virtual groups and discuss life management, money management, health management.  The Shelter is currently at 50% capacity, but the need is much greater.  They had 41 women in the program in 2019 and served 61 people total.  The program is successful with individuals and organizations still donating.  The group was unable to conduct their main fundraising event due to COVID where the make about $150,000/year.   They  do have a huge volunteer base providing donations to the shelter, to include sign-up meals, groceries including milk, juice.  Women must be clean (off drugs) when they come to the Haven.  Follow-up for 2-3 years is provided for every person.  They are always open.  

 

Raffle:  Progressive down to 9 cards.  The Ace of Spades still in the pile, was not pulled – rolls.  Rich Babjak won the $50.00 and donated it to the Haven.
