Libertyville Sunrise Rotary Bulletin January 4, 2023

President Pinsel presided this week, and we opened our meeting with a pledge and a prayer. Once more though we went without a song that might have put a smile on our faces, as we marched forth to take on the world.

 

This week we had Edwin Moore, a long time resident of Mundelein and formerly of Libertyville, join us for breakfast.

 

No one bragged this week, and I hope that is not a sign that we are feeling guilty, because we have already broken all are New Year’s resolutions.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

We also went without announcements this week, which hopefully is not a sign that we are all leading very dull lives these days.

 

Eliot Pinsel conducted Fun & Frolics this week, and we all learned some very helpful trivia this week, such as there are 336 dimples in a golf ball, and that Olympic Gold Medals are made mostly of silver.  My favorite part though was learning that the top movies in both the 1970s and the 1980s were science fiction productions.  It was Star Wars for the 70s and ET for the 80s. 

 

Our speakers this week were Kelly Candotti Habas, and  Mak Nong  from GLASA.  GLASA stands for Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association, and it is a non-profit organization from Libertyville, which provides opportunities for the physically disabled to participate in athletic activities.  The organization will be celebrating their 25^th anniversary in 2024.

 

GLASA serves approximately 1,000 disabled athletes, and about 90% of these people are Lake County residents, who participate in live events.  They also have some virtual programs which got started during the pandemic and which includes participants from all over the country. 

Some of their big events they sponsored in 2022 included:

 

A football tournament which included seven teams from around the country, each sponsored by an NFL team.  GLASA’s sponsor of course were everyone’s favorite team, the Chicago Bears.

 

The Great Lakes Games which had over 200 disabled athletes from various places competing in elven different sports, the most popular being track and field.

 

Sending disabled athletes to participate in the Chicago Marathon.

 

Goal Ball games.  Goal Ball is a game designed for the visually disabled in which they throw balls toward a goal.  

 

We collected $249.00 from our attendees to support the Libertyville Township Food Pantry.

 

 

This week we had $21.00 in the weekly raffle, and with our big pot continuing to expand astronomically, we reached an astonishing $68.00 in the big kitty with only 50s card left.  Howard Jaffe walked out with the weekly winnings, but sadly Rick Mittelman had to leave the larger prize on the table when he only managed to pull the seven of hearts.
