President Richard Schoeneman presided at the meeting and we opened with a pledge, a prayer, and a singing of “Fly Me to the Moon.”

 

Bill Rickert is celebrating his 29^th wedding anniversary.

 

Steve Risley is celebrating 35 years of marriage.

 

Carol August is celebrating 33 years of marriage.

 

Rich Schoeneman won the raffle at our wine tasting event.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

During our Rotary minute we heard that Rotary has raised over $1,600,000,000.00 for the elimination of polio, and we also heard that our efforts have not gone unnoticed.  Recently the Libertyville Village Board recognized our club for the contribution we have made toward eradicating this dreaded disease.

 

Our wine tasting event raised about $26,000.00 for charities including $5,000.00 to Equestrian Connection, which partnered with us in the raffle.

 

Tom Zengeler is continuing to collect coats for veterans through October 31

 

During the meeting we heard a call for volunteers to help with our fall highway cleanup and with the annual Pumpkin Festival in Cook Park, both of which were scheduled to take place on Saturday morning October 16. Since the bulletin is a little late this week, I can also happily report that both events went well.

 

Wanting to test us to our limits, Carol August held a contest this week, which required us to call on our athletic skills and dexterity as we attempted to lower a long bar to the floor using only our index fingers.  It was not quite as exciting as watching the Bears play the Packers, but it was still entertaining, and unlike with professional football games, there were no commercials.

 

Our speaker this week was our own Richard Mittelman, who reported on the fulfillment of his duties as chairman of club service for the Libertyville Sunrise Rotary Club.  Club service is one of Rotary’s Avenues of Service, and as our chairman Rick is responsible for keeping many important facets of our organization running smoothly.  This includes financial administration, making sure we are properly greeted each week, keeping a tough no nonsense sergeant at arms on the job, and providing meeting speakers; as well as overseeing, the bulletin, public relations, and fellowship activities.

 

In the public relationship area our club maintains both a web page and a Facebook page, and we sometimes distribute press releases.

 

On fellowship, Rick has been largely responsible for arranging the Fifth Wednesday events at which we hold the fun activities that we all look forward to in lieu of a morning meeting, during those months which have five Wednesdays.

 

Membership is also an important responsibility, because without a diligent effort to recruit, orientate, and retain members, our club would not be able to survive.

 

Jon Robb tried to win the progressive pot of $1,095 this week with 17 cards left, and everyone was sorry, when to his disappointment Jon only drew the three of clubs.  Or at least everyone said they were sorry he did not win the prize. Meanwhile Pat Hart won the more modest $37.00 weekly prize.
