BULLETIN – February 1, 2023

Elliot Pinsel opened the meeting, Howard Jaffe gave the pledge, and greeter Carol August led us in prayer. No song! Boo Hoo!

BRAGS:
There were no brags.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
-We are collecting for the Food Pantry today. $211 collected.

-We have complementary passes to Frozen at Copeland School.

 

-Rotary Anniversaries: Tim Dempsey – 31 years, Elliot Pinsel 16 years.

 

-39 days until the Fundraiser. 152 tickets sold. We will distribute tickets before the show. Silent auction items needed. We plan on double the items because we are hoping to sell 4 times the number of tickets. Sponsors are needed. Please take posters to businesses on Milwaukee Ave. Share our posts on Facebook and other sites.

 

FUN & FROLICS:
Robin O’Connor entertained us with fun food facts. She focused on small items that were normally thrown away but are now packaged for more cost.

PROGRAM:
Today’s program was in two parts, both pertaining to A Safe Place.

 

The first presenter was Christian Stevens, an Eagle Scout candidate with a project to renovate a room at A Safe Place. Christian has 2 merit badges remaining to achieve Eagle Scout status. He has a passion for art, photography and film. He also is interested in tech and has built 2 computers.

 

Families move into A Safe Place as a unit. He put himself in the shoes of the kids. His goal is to build an entertainment center for gaming and movies. He envisions a big screen with a Nintendo switch for kids and 2 TVs for adults. He plans a seating area with a custom built coffee table, an art space and a kids corner. His plan has 4 stages. 1. plan sketches, 2. fund raising, 3. sourcing materials, 4. Put the room together. He has a goal to raise $4,000 for the project and he has $3,100 so far.

 

Our second presenter was Roselle Diaz, Development Director for A Safe Place. Roselle has been with A Safe Place for 3 years. They are a residential program that provides secure emergency shelter, food, clothing, and other necessities for families fleeing abuse. They never shut down during the pandemic and have seen a 600 % increase in services needed. They have 5 avenues of service. 1. They operate a 33-bed shelter that allows survivors to begin healing. 2. There is a healing building that provides counseling, group therapy, and legal advocacy. 3. They provide abuser services consisting of 26 weeks of group counseling. 4. They provide visitations to 96 families offering safe custody. 5. They are developing school programs for the prevention of abuse.

 

We can support A Safe Place with new clothing donations. Also, they are conducting a 5k run in May to raise needed funds. Their goal is to end domestic violence.      

 

RAFFLE:
-Daily: $26 won by Jim Curtis who donated it to Christian Stevens’ project.

 

-Progressive: $155 (46 cards). Elliot Pinsel drew the Ace of Spades. New raffle next week!
