President Tucker Olson opened the meeting, Bill Rickert gave the pledge and Dave Potts led us in prayer. Jeff Harger, in a tribute to Larry Jelinek, sang: “You are my sunshine” with us.

 

-John McDonald told us about a 6/21 Engineers without borders fundraiser at a White Sox game. See John for details. 

 

-The Mother’s Trust golf outing is 6/15 at Pine Meadow. There are still slots available. See Larry Neal.

 

-Raffle tickets for the summer fundraiser are now available. They are $20 for one and $100 for six. They can be purchased from any member if you are paying by cash or check. Credit card purchases can be made on the website.  

 

-Steve Risley reminded us that the Rotary year ends on 6/30. If you are making a Paul

Harris contribution, get the check in to Steve. Our contributions this month affect matching $ available in three years.

-Teri Dreher still needs a couple for the trip to South Africa next year.

 

-Dave Potts won a Memorial Day tournament at Ivanhoe.

 

-Steve Risley will not have a child at LHS in the fall! His youngest is graduating and going on to Marquette to study nursing.

 

Bob Zamor conducted a fly casting tournament won by Dennis Kratohwil.

 

Today’s program was Bill Rickert talking about our Service Above Self Award. The award was established in 1997 for those whose contributions exemplify their service above self to the community. Recipients cannot be Rotarians but can be family members. They must have demonstrated that their service efforts benefit others. The nominee expects no reward for their efforts. Emphasis is placed on those who overcame adversity in their own lives and now help others to do the same.

 

There have been 12 recipients in 21 years. The last was 6 years ago and that is too long. Candidates must have very impressive growth and do not want recognition. They must be truly worthy. Presentation will be at a Rotary meeting with family and friends. We will put out a press release and the recipient receives a clock given to represent time spent, the most precious contribution. The Club will put out a press release and make a donation to the recipient’s organization.

 

We need help. Please think about possible candidates and talk to Bill or a Board member.
