We opened our meeting with a pledge and a prayer followed by singing “We Are The Champions” in tribute to our Monday night golf league, who just wrapped up another fine season with a celebratory dinner at Bill Rickert’s house. 

 

 

Howard Jaffe bragged about his recent road trip, which included watching baseball games at four ball parks and visiting the Cooperstown Museum in what he considered a very educational experience.

 

Scott Hezner noted that he was celebrating his 38^th wedding anniversary.

 

Tucker Olson bragged that early voting is about to start, which he no doubt expects to do very well in.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

We have a slew of birthdays this week, including Scott Hezner, Tim Klein, Steve Risley, John McDonald, and Tom Miller.  Let’s just hope that we all manage to age gracefully.

 

The district has awarded our club a public image award, which I we should no doubt all be proud of receiving.

 

Our club will be holding our fall fund-raiser  on October 29, at the Libertyville Civic Center from 3:00 to 6:00. Festivities will include 18 wine tables, 1 spirits table, and cigar smoking outside.  We need to sell more tickets though.  We are shooing for 200 attendees, and so far we only have about 30 sales.

 

Howard Jaffe recognized two recent contributors to the Rotary Foundation.  Greg Hill has become a first time Paul Harris Fellow, while Ron Lapin has become a Paul Harris Fellow plus one.

 

Our fun & frolics master of ceremony also failed to show this week, so President Elliott Pinsel held a trivia quiz on who is alive and who is dead.   I was of course pleased to learn that from the television series Laverne & Shirley. Shirley and Lennie are still alive.  Maybe they can still revive the show.

 

This week our speaker was Glenn Garlick, who is the district chair of the End Polio Now, and he updated us on the Polio Plus Society which Rotary recently instituted.  Members of the Polio Plus Society pledge to contribute $100.00 a year toward the eradication of polio. 

 

Although Rotary’s long standing campaign to end polio has reaped great successes in reducing this scourge around the world, we have still not quite achieved the goal of eliminating the disease from our planet, and we are currently shooting for completing this mission in 2026. 

 

One challenge is that in many parts of the Third World polio vaccines contain live viruses, and these can spread when discharged in waterways.  There have been recent incidents of polio found in New York and London due to this cause, but hopefully a new type of vaccine will reduce this problem.

 

Another obstacle though in the path of the total eradication of polio is that some people for whatever reason do not get vaccinated. In the United States for example, approximately ten present of the population remains unvaccinated against polio.

 

 

This week Ron Lapin won $30.00 in our regular drawing, while Tom Miller failed to land the progressive pot of $868.00 when he only pulled the king of diamonds.
