BULLETIN - April 24, 2024

President Babjak opened the meeting with Doug Fendon leading us in prayer.

We held our once a month evening meeting at Mickie Finns.  They supplied a wonderful meal of salad and 4 different pizza varieties.

BRAGS:
Bill Taranowski- Claire, his daughter, will be graduating from Purdue’s School of Mechanical Engineering shortly.  She just  won the Best Impact Award for her senior project.  She had a number of job offers of which she will be moving to Boston to start her career.  Claire was a RYLA student as well as an Interact member at Libertyville High School.   Bill’s son David, at this point in his schooling at LHS, plans to attend MIT.  He recently took the ACT tests and scored a 36.  Congratulations to both. 

Rich Babjak read a Thank You card from the Stars Swim Team for our recent donation.  In the card was a heartfelt Thank You with an explanation as to how they use the money.  Our donation helps lower fees for all participants  and adds more kids to the event because the price is affordable.  It is always good to hear as to how are donations are helping out. 

Robin O’Conner attended the Rotary Regional Meetings held in Evanston at the Rotary International building. Our district, #6440, and another were combined for this April event.  Robin is the District Chair for Interact Club at L.H.S. The day long event was “informative and enjoyable”.  

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Our May 1^st  meeting at Lambs Farm, two students from L.H.S. will be attending. They will be hosting Fun & Frolics at the meeting.  If I heard correctly, the students were part of our scholarship awards. 

Larry Neal is hosting the Social Event on May 9^th.  Starting at 5:00 pm, we will meet at the Northbrook Sports Club (located in Hainesville, at 160 Sports Club Drive, 60030), for a sporting clays shoot.   Afterwards, we will be traveling to Crossroads for food and drink.  If you have never fired a shotgun before, you will be shown how to do it.  Attire:  comfortable clothes; shoes such as hiking shoes or boots-you are in the fields and unpaved trails.  Contact Larry Neal if you want to attend.   

April 29:  The Rotary Golf League will start at 4:00 pm at  the Prairie Golf Course in Mundelein.  The league plays every Monday evening.    League President Ron Lapins, has sent out a bulletin to league members, if you do not have it, contact Ron for it.  The league will be playing alternatively at the 4 different Lake County Golf courses this year (Prairie, Traditional, Thunderhawk, and Brae Loch).  You are welcome to invite friends to play. 

Mark Your Calendars:

May 22-Last evening Sunrise meeting at Mickie Finns.    There will be no evening meeting at Mickie Finns in June.

June 26:   Installation Dinner for Sunrise.  Details will be announced.  Plan on inviting your spouse to this event.   This will be the last meeting for President Babjak and the first one for President-Elect Robb.  Please plan on attending.  

FUN & FROLICS:  

 Our guest speaker, Michael Schachner had double duty this evening. Golf was his program topic so he incorporated his Fun and Frolics by asking the members how many of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the USA have you played?  Did you know there are four courses in the Chicagoland area?  (Medinah Country Club course # 3; Olympia Fields Country Club; The Chicago Golf Club; and Shoreacres Country Club , right next door to Libertyville. 

We were placed in teams and the winning team had a total of 16 plays  or visitations out of the Top 100.  

PROGRAM:: Michael Schachner talks about his career in Golf and other Golf Observations

   Michael started swinging a club at age 3.  Of course,  it was a plastic Fisher Price one but that is where his career started.   He played high school golf and then attended Duke University.  One of his college experiences was an opportunity to play Augusta, where the MASTERS is held.  He shared his experience there by recalling the fact he birdied the first three holes on the course.   The next three holes brought him back down to earth by bogeying them.

    After college Michael became a Pro golfer.  He played on the Pro TOUR AMERICAS circuit (as it is called now).  The sites for the league were courses in South America and Canada.  He told a story about playing in Chile and having a 14 year old caddie for the event.    
    A Pro golfer pays for their own travel expenses,  so winning prize money at events is a necessity. 

   One of his favorite clubs is a hybrid-2 iron.  

    Many of the Pros on the tours are friendly and good people, however, they are your competition.

    When you play a tournament, you plan ahead by studying  the course as to what clubs for shots you will be taking the next day for each hole. If you are on your game, you have played it in your head already and you are now just executing the play.   One plans the night before by looking at projected wind speeds, course layouts, and where the pin is placed on the green.  Golf is a mental game!   The more one has planned for the game the next day, the better the chances are to win.

    Golf is a wonderful game.  You can play it your whole life and be competitive using your handicap. 

    Go to a PGA Tour tournament, even a smaller event.  Support a great sport!

    “I like helping others with their golf game. I always am willing to help with a tip on how to improve your game” were his closing remarks.
