New President Rich Shoeneman opened the meeting, Greg Hill gave the pledge, Tom Stanczyk led us in prayer and Dennis Kratohwil helped us through his version of the song “Moon Shadow”.

 

-Tony Collins is glad to be back, has two kids out of college and did a triathlon with his wife in Door County recently.

 

-We have a new piece of technology courtesy of Jeff Harger. It is an Owl that has cameras to pick up any speaker in our meeting room.

 

-There will be a social gathering on 7/29 at Century Park in Vernon Hills. It will feature games including Bocci Ball.

 

-Tom Stanczyk received a perfect attendance award.

 

-President Rich announced his goals for the coming year including: increasing membership to 44, 35 members involved in service projects, $10k annual fund contributions and $5k to Polio Plus, and 4 service projects completed among others.

 

-We will have 3 meetings to distribute checks to 31 local charities on: 8/11, 8/18 and 8/25.

 

-Fall wine tasting fundraisers on !0/2 and 10/9 from 2:30 to 4:30. Tickets available on 8/13.

 

-Bob Zamor told us about 2 upcoming Guatemala trips. See Bob if interested.

 

-There was a Daily Herald article recently about the 60^th anniversary of Lamb’s Farm.

 

Bill Rickert entertained us with a game of Rotary Bingo.

 

Today’s program is Kenzie MacKillup, local director of Feed my Starving Children. FMSC began as Christian organization feeding children around the world. Pre pandemic they packed meals consisting of 4 ingredients and sent them to partners in 78 countries. They were feeding spirits through volume packing. Their mission was to enact positive change.

2020 was a bad year. It was impossible to pack meals with 6 feet of spacing. This crippled the organization and they had to layoff staff and take pay cuts. There were no volunteers to pack the meals. FMSC began using 5 contractors to machine pack the meals. There was no feeding of the spirit for volunteers. They were only able to pack 100 million meals in the early part of the pandemic. A fraction of past production. They needed a new system. They finished 2020 with 270 meals packed.

 

2021 has a better outlook. Facilities are still limited. FMSC is doing Zoom meetings with donors, users and vendors. They will be completely open including mobile packing sites. The 2021 budget is for 370 million meals. The biggest ingredient in the old meal was rice. They are now locally sourcing the rice and can get 2 and ½ meals in the same space as 1. They call this project 6:37 for the bible passage about loaves and fishes. They have had shipping difficulties.

 

We can sign up to pack online or donate. 25 cents feed a child for a day and $88 feeds them for a year. Locally they are doing 4 sessions per day.
