Sunrise Rotary Bulletin —June 5, 2019

-President Diana Taylor called the meeting to order. Larry Neal led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Ron Lapins gave the prayer. Dennis Kratohwii led us in 10 seconds of silence for D Day, remembrance.

 

Brad Gutzler, guest of Larry Neal and Else Danckers and Guadalupe Bueno of Waukegan to College,

 

 Greg Hill advised he had a good day at the races during the club outing at Arlington Park

 

-Ron Lapins said his stepdaughter had her first birthday, his wife passed her Real Estate exam, and he is now 6 months with a new knee.

 

-Larry Neal celebrated wedding anniversary.

 

-Dave Potts thanked everyone who participated in his successful "Smiles from The Heart" dental care program.

 

Greg Hill announced the distribution of tickets for the Wine, Beer, and Cigar Festival were handed out or are available at the Sergeant of Arms desk after the meeting. Greg will take over as incoming club president after the installation in July

 

Larry Neal announced the Mother's Trust Golf Outing Wilf be at Pine Meadows Golf Course on June 14th

 

Greg Hill advised the next board meeting will be Tuesday, June 11

 

Steve Risley advised everyone about making a $500 donation to the Rotary Foundation.

 

-Rich Shoeneman conducted a bean bag toss game for everyone to have a turn getting the bag in the hole. Two tables were mini bean bags which made for a fun twist. The table with the most points won. Enjoyable.

 

Elyse Dankers, founder of Waukegan to college and Guadelupe Buena, a student who's befitted from the program gave a wonderful recap of the positive eff0fts to help Waukegan students get to college. The program is in its 10th year of operation and relies on a dedicated staff, parents, volunteers to make it a success. They work in preparing students for college readiness, from 5th grade through graduation. They work with students that have potential and backing of their parents.

 

The schools lack resources so W2C steps to fill the void. For example, there is no counselor for the 9th   and 10th grade students, so 51 first generation college grads are now mentoring these students. The program will have 20 seniors next year.

W2C has a number of new programs such as on-site interviewing with college reps, parents educating parents, internships in summer, texting about things •happening at school, and lunch and learn. The staff goes to the elementary schools. 3-5th grades to talk about the importance of college, and conduct college fairs.

 

Guadalupe Bueno is a hard-working coachable student who just finished her 1st year at COQ College, Iowa. She started in the program as a 10 year old and benefitted from tutoring and summer activities. She said each student has an advisor, who points out faults and weaknesses so she learns to correct herself. She had to learn to take constructive criticism, learn how to be independent and make good choices.

 

The W2C program has a $600,000 annual budget, and the goal is to add students and community outreach.

 

Rich Schoeneman sat in for Tim Dempsey in the progressive but drew the 7 of clubs, so it rolls. Tim's ticket was also called for the daily where he won $26.
